(OT) server harddrive

I was also confused by this when I tried to set up Raid 1 on our NT
4.0 server. The hard drive that is going to be the mirror must not
be formatted or partitioned at all, it must be totally blank (as in
right out of the box). This doesn't seem right but that's how it
worked for me. Reading the directions from Microsoft led me to
believe that the second drive (the mirror) had to be formatted, but I
had the same problem that Wendy had!

That's the way I did it. Unfortunately, I still received the
problem. I suppose that the second drive could be bad. I just
thought I'd pursue other ideas before I concluded a bad drive.

Leave the second drive as empty space. Select the primary drive and
the
empty space and then establish the mirror. Windows will set up the
second
partition for you.

I just installed new hard drives on our server. They are both the exact same model, serial number, brand, and size. When I go in to disk administrator to mirror the drives it says that my partitions are not the same size on one hard drive as they are on the other. I know that I partitioned them correctly. When I use Server Magic to change the partition size on one of them it gives me an error and brings up disk administrator.

Any ideas why this is happening and how I can correct it?

Not sure what caused the problem, but the most expedient solution is to
remove the parturitions from both drives and then partitition them again.
When you repartition the drives make sure you do it exactly the same.

You should probably do the same sequence of events, but reverse the drives.
The one you designated as the second drive make it the primary, etc. This
should show if the drive is really bad or just has some slight irregularity.

I think the problem is that both drives have the same serial number! ;)

NT leaves some junk somewhere on the drive that stays even through FDisk
and partitioning utilities. To really clean it up, you have to completely
zero out the drive (or at least the first few tracks.) Most the drive
manufacturers have utilities to do this - check their web site.
