[OT/Server] Win2008 Server Std x64 Memory Limit

Didn't see SmartStart anywhere. Another thing they don't ship with servers (or this one anyway)....PS2 ports for mouse and keyboard. Had to get a USB adapter to put it on my PS2 based KVM.

So HP isn't shipping SmartStart w/ its servers anymore? I always liked the SmartStart-based install.

Found the issue. Need to install the OS. The setup CD does not guide the OS install. A note in the installation notes says the CD is designed to be used after the OS is installed. But you can't see that note on the server itself because it is in HTML and there is no browser on the server at that point. Would be nice if they had a note on the disk to use it AFTER the OS is installed.

Thanks for all the suggestions.

Quick question about memory in a 64 bit Windows 2008 Server Standard system. I'm loading via the HP setup and it is prompting for the OS. I have 12GB RAM in the machine and it says max allowed is 4GB and won't go any further. On a 64 bit OS? MS says the max is 32GB for Standard. I think the HP setup wizard is confusing 32 bit Standard and 64 bit. Anyone know if I can lie at this point and tell it I am installing Enterprise and then install Std? Does the specified OS impact any settings HP makes? I recall a discussion here several months ago about 64 bit memory limits and suspect someone may have run into this setup issue before.

I don't recall having any problems with SmartStart and x64 HP servers.

Ultimately SmartStart's job is just to get the HP tools onto the box in the right order.

What version of the SmartStart CD did they send you? Are you sure there wasn't a 64-bit Windows option when you choose the OS?

You could lie about the version of the OS license. I don't think it cares once you're up and going.

It's not really SmartStart. The CD says "HP Proliant Dl180 G6 Server Easy Set-up CD" Version 2.0. Bootable CD that loads drivers and config files. I have the RAID parts all set up and everything was going well (looked like it had loaded drivers already) but then it choked on the memory. I really think it is a bug it HP's Easy Set-up and is confusing x64 Standard with x32 Standard. I tried 32 just in case they were backward but no luck. It will proceed OK if I select Enterprise but at that point I clicked Previous to go back. The next screen asks where the OS will be loaded from and what format the media is. So I haven't even put the MS disk in yet. If the drivers are really already loaded I think I am OK to lie to it but don't want to risk it at this point.

I have our reseller's rep contacting their HP experts but no news from them and I want to get this server ready to load SQL Server and CRM on by Monday. Hopefully they will get back to me pretty soon or I will take a chance on fibbing to it..

Thanks,
-Todd

Personally... I have always hated those disks... great once the OS is installed
for all the drivers, but I never use them til after the install if possible.

Not sure, but I know at one point with some model HP servers, you needed to
remove all but 1 of the physical processers in order to install, then once you
got the OS installed you could drop the remaining processors into the machine,
maybe this is a similar situation?

Yes, I had been thinking of taking out the 8GB memory I just added to trim it back to 4GB. Might be safer that way than telling it I'm doing Enterprise.
