OT: SMTP Mail Relay

Jasper,

Maybe I'm missing something but what are you trying to accomplish by placing
a masthead mail server in the DMZ? If it is not providing any outward
looking services, then why not directly route to your internal exchange
server?

Michael

We just need a simple setup where our firewall directs our email to the SMTP
relay server located in the DMZ. The server would then send it to our
exchange server within our LAN.

Jasper

Such as a front-end and back-end setup? Or more complicated?

Have you checked out the Edge Transport server role for Exchange server. It may be what your looking for. You have to install it on a server sitting in the DMZ of your firewall. ???

You should look at taking a simple PC, put a second NIC card in it and
install a barebones install of Linux - basically OS, SMTP, and DNS
should be all you need - nothing fancy.

The best way this can be done is by a simple setup of
Linux with postfix and mailscanner togehter with webmin as
administration interface
-http://www.mailscanner.info/

When done properly this is "the best" way to do with maximum security
and no initial costs or maintenance costs
but beware: you have to know what you're doing and it can be time
consuming to set this up.

Another way to accomplish this is using mdeamon als relay mailserver,
this is very user friendly mailserver based on the windows OS. but this
involves initial software costs and maintenance costs.
