Does anybody know of a good industrial Tablet PC that a few users could walk around with on the shop floor and use Vantage through a wireless connection? The smaller the better and it must be rugged.

I looked into this about a couple of months ago. The only "real" rugged
tablet out there is the Panasonic Toughbooks that I found. However, you can
buy casings for some of the other ones out there. The only problem with the
Panasonics is that they cost just under $4K. Size wise they were as big as
the average laptop.

Took a while but I found the website again: www.otterbox.com

When you go to the website, you will not see anything for the tablet PCs.
We received a pamplet from them saying that they should have the casings by
the end of 2003. Supposed to be generic for any tablet.

A long shot, but I would look at the units UPS uses. I think Psion make
something. But anyway, the UPS units look fairly industrial, include a bar
code scanner and seem sort of "spiff".

Another option would be something like a Wyse 3820TX tablet. It's a Ce.Net
thin client that runs RDP 5.0.

In this case you would put a XP-Pro PC in your computer room and access it
from the 3820TX as a thin client.

Kind of like Windows Terminal Server only on a 1 to 1 basis.

The unit comes with a 3 yr warranty and has a 802.11b option.

Try going to the Symbol web page and look at their explorer series. They're
built like tanks, and have 8 hour batteries, with connections for readers.
But they are about 5K each.

I have looked into the Wyse 3820TX tablet and that just might be the solution we are looking for. You suggest using a XP-Pro PC because it allows a RDP connection but I would like to try using our Vantage server. How would you set up the Vantage server to accept this? How would you setup Terminal service? I've never used terminal service except for just remote administration.

You might want to consider NEC. They start at under $2000 with XP
tablet and 802.11b and are the lightest at under 2 lbs. They are
not designed to be rugged, but I had an NEC rep come out and he
showed me a rugged case prototype with hardened edges and a screen
protector. This was a few months back so the case should be
available. The other unit I liked was panasonics toughbook with a
detached screen. The cpu hung from your hip in a holster and has
802.11b while a small rugged 8" screen worked wirelessly with the

Or check out this piece of hardware...I don't know whether you would call it
a swollen PDA or a shrunken tablet but it is a fully functional wireless XP
box so it should have no problem running Vantage.
