Another company is asking me to troubleshoot their Unix computer over the
phone. So bear with me............

Apparently they can't even do anything on this computer. They said that
their whole hard drive was wiped out on purpose (don't know why). They said
they booted up the computer and it is now at an ISL> prompt and they're not
sure what to do now.

It's been a while since I had my Unix classes so if anyone has any
suggestions?........

Thanks!

Wendy there are numerous flavors of Unix... many of the commands
crossover.
Is this Unix box connected to the outside world? In which case it may
have
an internal ip address and an external ip address. You can run
/sbin/ifconfig or ping your hostname...

Hey everyone!

If I'm on a Unix computer, what command do I use to find out my IP
address
on that computer?

Thanks!

Not a Unix expert but you could maybe do a trace route to yourself (using
computer name as target). I know on my PC (in DOS) I can "tracert caugheyt"
and get my IP address.

The command is ifconfig (interface config). Some systems put it in a
directory that's not in the normal path, so if it can't find it try
/sbin/ifconfig or /usr/sbin/ifconfig

The syntax varies a little on different systems. If it doesn't show detail,
try adding an -a parameter, like: ifconfig -a

Here's a sample from ours. the number after the "inet" tag is the IP
(don't confuse it with the broadcast address)
# ifconfig
fxp0: flags=8843<UP,BROADCAST,RUNNING,SIMPLEX,MULTICAST> mtu 1500
inet 208.62.177.50 netmask 0xffffffe0 broadcast 208.62.177.63
inet6 fe80::202:b3ff:fe89:fac2%fxp0 prefixlen 64 scopeid 0x1
inet 208.62.177.36 netmask 0xffffffff broadcast 208.62.177.36
ether 00:02:b3:89:fa:c2
media: Ethernet 100baseTX <full-duplex>
status: active
lo0: flags=8049<UP,LOOPBACK,RUNNING,MULTICAST> mtu 16384
