OT: Virtualization Software (VMWare-Like)

microsoft virtual server is a bit cheaper depending.

There was a free opensource one.. let me try to locate it. I had
looked at some code in the past for a project and know I have it
bookmarked.
vmware also has a developer edition for free I believe.

Does anyone use or know of a shareware or inexpensive alternative to
VMWare (VMware.com)? I am looking for any software that will create a
VM within a windows environment. I am trying to create a user
environment that is completely self-contained. VMware does this well,
but with an $800 price tag I figured I'd try shopping around ;)

Thanks...

one thing to be aware of as well.. both vmware and virtual server
will not do virtual symmetric multi processing - ie.., if you have
more than one proc on a machine - too bad. vmwares muchhhh more
expensive line will, and ms will (I believe...couldn't get a straight
answer at least on current version from virtual server product
manager a few months back) with new hypervisor in 2007 or so.

doh.. sorry about all the emails....just found this link on my system
http://bochs.sourceforge.net/
I haven't run these other free ones - we've only run vmware and ms
virtual server, Im partial to virtual server - great interfaces to it
and stable. However when moving to higher product line wmware has
features that can't be beat on their esx line - the vsmp among others
(performance).
