I live 11 miles away, a moped doing 300MPG or a bike will do it for me.

Good morning,
I need to setup a Remote connection to my network, and want to do
this via the internet. I've gone through previous class notes, notes
from the Microsoft site, and looked at various other web sites.
Seems like there is more than one way to skin a cat. Does anybody
have any concise notes on doing this. I'll be connecting from home,
XP Pro (Broadband) to an NT 4.0 Server (T1).

Thanks,

Les, we are doing this through Terminal server. We have w2k Server with
terminal server installed and I'm requiring all remote systems to be XP pro
for connection. This seems just about bullet proof. (Thanks to Mike
Brumfield at Palitto Consulting).

Too bad you're not on W2K server - it has built-in terminal services for
administration purposes.

I think the best setup for you would be:

1. If you already have VPN access to your network skip to step 5
2. Setup the Routing and Remote Access Service (RRAS) on one of your NT4
servers. It is a service added through network properties and authenticates
VPN requests.
3. For this to work, your router must redirect external port 1723 to the
NT4 server you setup RRAS on.
4. Now you setup a standard VPN connection on your client computer using
the external IP address of your router.
5. If you use RRAS and connect to the VPN, you will have an IP address on
your internal network. Now you're just like any other workstation sitting
in your network, but you need a way to control your server from a remote
workstation. Terminal services (admin mode) works best, but you don't have
that option on NT4. The best I've found (free) for doing this is WinVNC.
You can get the latest version at
http://www.uk.research.att.com/vnc/index.html. When you install it on the
server, don't forget to install the service (winvnc start menu option after
the install).

The good news: you can play around with VNC while you're at work to make
sure it is functioning properly. You can also work with your VPN
separately. If they are both working individually, they will work together
and you'll have what you're looking for.

There are several open-source VNC versions (original, Tridia, Tight,
probably others.) But I'd highly recommend "Real VNC" at
www.RealVNC.com They finally got the compression and other optimizations
working well AND auto-negotiating between the client & server. With this,
it's now fast enough to run over modems or relatively slow links.

From the website: "RealVNC is the official home of VNC, staffed by the
original team who created and developed it whilst at AT&T. The mission of
RealVNC is to act as the focal point for open source VNC. We are continuing
to improve VNC with our own new features and by evaluating features
developed by others in the open source community and incorporating the best
of them into the official codebase "

We aren't fully configured as yet but Mike says that that isn't going to be
a problem. I've already been roaming seriptiously, unseen from home. I
haven't done any reboots yet. But its pretty much full remote admin. And
fast enough to work reasonably. (I live 45 miles one way, and when war
breaks out and gas goes insane, this is one girl that's going remote.)
