OT - VPN / Terminal Services conn. to W2K serv

RAdmin is $35 per for two PCs, in any combination, server or viewer -
www.radmin.com. By the way, for those running RDP only, it also has
several well-known vulnerabilities.

have fun,

Is there a way of logging to an existing session on the server using
VPN / Terminal Services? I can connect from home allright, but it
logs me on with a new session and I cannot see the programs already
running on the server. It's Win. 2000 Server, at home Win XP Home
Edition.

Mike,

Set up the VPN on another machine. Then use a VNC session to get to the
server you want (or any machine on your network.) It will be as though
you're physically logging in at that server.

I found "VNC Ver. 3.3.7" download site at University of Cambridge site. Is that what I need?
The VPN is set up through PIX firewall. I have installed VPN client and Terminal Services client at home. Do I need to install VNC

Do you want to see the Console session? Or a session thats been
disconnected but still active? I believe the console session is the only
one you can't remote administer. You should have timeout periods setup for
the RDP Client so that the session will end after its been disconnected.
This will keep your resources free. If you sign onto the server via a
Terminal Server session (Non-Console) you can right mouse click on any
session and remotely access it. You have to change some setting on the
Remote Tab of the User setup in Active Diretory.

Hope that helps.

I use VNC to monitor all my servers from my office or from my home. It's
a piece of cake. Install VNC server on the computers you want to connect to.
Install VNC at your workstation. In house, click on VNC viewer > Put in the
IP you want to go to,(it maintains a drop down list of dialed IP's) and log
in with a password. From home establish your VPN through the firewall then
start VNC Viewer. It's great fast and dependable. Latency is only the speed
of your connection. I have a cable modem at home and it is literally
no-lag-time.

It is as if you were sitting at the keyboard of whatever computer you
log into. Just run the VNC 3.3.7 package fearlessly on your computer and one
other for testing, you set a password on the host. It will all become clear
to you. It's a very well done , very small package I've been using for
almost four years now. It sets itself up as a service. No reboot required.
At my last job we set up Terminal Servers in auto dealerships( to run a
suite of apps that ran their dealership) all over the country. I would jump
to the terminal server at the dealer then jump into the users sessions of
the terminal services from my desk in the main office.
Now, I've set up all of the senior staff and sales people here with
Cisco VPN to get through my PIX firewall and VNC to get to their own
computers from their homes or the road.

VNC is the last thing you want to allow into your network from the
outside. It has weak authentication, it's highly sniffable, and its
list of vulnerabilities is long. Go here:

http://www.securityfocus.com/search

and search on "vnc" for an interesting list of exploits against it.

While you might feel its OK to run strictly within your network, I'd
recommend using something a bit stronger. RAdmin, Citrix (with strong
encryption enabled), etc. There are encrypted versions of VNC, but it
has other vulnerabilities.

Forewarned is forearmed. Or for those who don't want to search bugtraq,
ignorance is bliss.

have a great weekend,
john

I wanted to administer the console session, just need to do things differently from now on. I was successful in connecting to the
server over the weekend, either using Terminal Services Client or Remote Desktop Client.
Thanks to every one for replying.

So this discussion of the vulnerability of VNC has me thinking
I had a need for this on my servers this weekend but I have not
installed it on any server
I have data collection PC's with VNC and it works well
I had a trial version of Dameware Utilities which is REALLY NICE
Stuff but expensive
So when the budget has been frozen and you can connect via your VPN
and want to remote configure your servers desktop
What do you recommend?
