OT - WAP tyo WAP

If you are doing anything other than data collection on the far side
of that wireless bridge, you may have some serious performance
issues. I even experience noticeable lag with data collections on
occasion. Just a heads up.

They just busted my fiber between to buildings 100 yards apart. I have a
Wireless Access Point in the disconnected building. My question is If I set
up a Wireless Access Point the closest I can in the connected building will
the two WAP's act as a bridge ? Both buildings are on the same subnet.

Yes - but the equipment you buy must support bridging not all of them do. I've had good luck with Buffalo's products and SMC.

Linksys has gotten iffy since Cisco purchase.

Cliff,

100 yards is close enough for copper.

String a temporary Cat-5 cable between the -2- buildings using hubs or
switches.

I have 2 buildings about 320 feet apart with 4 x cat-5 cables running
between them. Installed Cisco 2924XL switches in both buildings right by
the openings the tubes to stay within cat-5 distance limitations. With the
2924XL switches I could then port bind the 4 cables into 1 logical cable.
Or 4 x 100 = 4 x 200 in full duplex mode = or 800 total. Not as fast as
fiber but 6 years ago it was about 10% of the cost.

As long as it doesn't rain you're ok.

With wireless you are going to have a wide open - hack able - door in your
network.

Todd - Not true,

The copper is a better solution if it is possible, but the wireless could be setup in less than an hour.

When set to bridging mode - the two AP only communicate with each other and do not associate with any other Mac addresses.
Still would turn off SSID broadcast and enable WEP 128.

Charles,

I've got a couple of spools of copper laying around and the tools to make
ends so it's my first choice and I could string a wire and put ends on it
pretty fast if I had to.

Wireless AP's ... I'll give you that ... if configured properly they can be
locked down to some extent. Honestly, since I'm a bit slow in the head, it
would take me awhile to figure out the settings ... :-)
