OT; What CPU ? Blank Title 51958

Thanks for the input. Does the difference in L2 cache between two Core-2
processors make that much of a difference for a "typical" pc? I am buying
for the future. We are on 6.1 and looking at 8.0 in the next 12-18 months.
Typical office pc's have a 4-5 year replacement cycle. The L2 cache jumps
from 2 to 4 meg for another $150. Seems like an easy decision for the money
assuming you use the additional memory.

This was easier when all you had to do was compare clock speeds. Any
thoughts?

Sincerely,

I am spec'ing a Dell Optiplex. Any thoughts on a Pentium D vs a Core 2
processor?

Get the Core. It's really more like a "Pentium 5" and has much more
performance potential.

The Pentium D is just two P-4s on one chip, which is to say it's memory
bandwidth bottleneck is now twice as bad ;)

Vantage 8 is very quick on a Core 2 Duo 2Ghz (laptop) with 2GB RAM :-)

Core 2 over Pentium D

I've noticed that they have a Core 2 1.86GHz processor know. How does that compare to the P4 3Ghz speeds? Is it faster because it's a Core 2?

The Core architecture is superior to the P4's, and has more crunch power
at lower clock speeds. So, like I said last week, don't compare on GHz
alone.

Tom's Hardware has this page that attempts to compare lots of CPUs.
http://www23.tomshardware.com/cpu.html Unfortunately, it appears to
only be desktop chips -- no Opterons or Xenons. Not sure which
benchmark is most applicable? Maybe the "Multitaking I" or "Sandra
Multimedia Integer"? A lot of them are gaming-based, which is more
dependent on video and specialized CPU instruction extensions; ignore
those.
