OT: Whistle / Bell Systems for Shop Floor

Our's was about £400 and it rings multiple sirens as many times a day you want.

Comes with full software to control it and for T&A, Holidays etc.

Yeah, they clock via ADP. And yes, there is a bolt on [expensive] solution via ADP but that’s precisely why I was asking if there were other creative, clever solutions that someone else implemented here.

Perhaps I could hang a disco ball from the shop ceiling and turn the spotlight on it at designated times…. :-) Just seeing what else is out there.

So you have a separate clocking software where your guys clock in when they arrive and clock out when they leave? If so, why cant it be linked to this?

Ah - ours as standard came with the the 'bells and whistles'. I thought most did! :-)

How do your guys know when the shift is due to end etc or when lunchtime is? Do you rely on them looking at their watches/clocks?

Yeah, they clock via ADP. And yes, there is a bolt on [expensive] solution via ADP but that’s precisely why I was asking if there were other creative, clever solutions that someone else implemented here.

Perhaps I could hang a disco ball from the shop ceiling and turn the spotlight on it at designated times…. :-) Just seeing what else is out there.

So you have a separate clocking software where your guys clock in when they arrive and clock out when they leave? If so, why cant it be linked to this?

No, doesn't need to. I'm just envisioning a solution that connects via wireless network and configurable from HR's desktop.

Anybody use a whistle or bell system to alert shop employees of breaks and
shift start/end times?

Curious on what is "new" out there. Thanks.

We just bought one of these PT-series timers when we moved our fab shop to a new facility: http://belltimers.com/PT_seriesbelltimers.htm

The timer we have on our main production floor is from the same company, and it's basically an industrial light/sprinkler timer. The PT-series unit is a little board hooked to a relay that drives a bell. They'll even pre-program the time and and lunch/break times for you if you ask nicely...

We use and old digital timer that is multi programmable on two relays.

One relay signals a higher pitch horn sound. The other is set to a lower
pitch sound.

All sounds sent through the paging system. The model we have is only 24
hr. programmable so if you're in on Sunday you get blown out of your
shoes by the horns

Works well until you get someone that's tone deaf.

There are clocks outside of the production areas if someone needs to see
the time.

A few years ago I developed a system using an Allen Bradley PLC, it had a network connection to sync time with a time server. Used outputs to control horns and lights - the system was designed for a very large manufacturing plant, so there were numerous horns and lights. Since the plant was 24/7, the shift changes and break times were fixed, so no adjustments were needed after installation.

Vic,

From our network admin

We did this by doing the following:

1. Found a doorbell (ding-dong) wav file on the internet

2. Used a USB microphone to record my voice saying the different times
when the bell would ring

3. Used Audacity (free download) to combine the doorbell wav file then
the time announcement shortly after the tone

4. Saved all these announcements as different mp3 files for the
different times

5. Created a batch file for each tone that starts media player, plays
the mp3 file, then closes media player

a. Ex. *start mplayer2.exe /play /close "C:\Shop Bell\Sounds\0700.mp3"*

6. Created scheduled tasks to run each tones batch file at the
specified time

7. Our servers soundcard is connected into our amplifier that controls
the paging system speakers. It is also getting its time via NTP so the
clock is synced.

Regards,
Scott
