[OT] Win 2K Server crashing

It seems we are OK this morning so far. We disabled "Veritas Backup Exec"
scheduled full backup and performed a partial backup instead yesterday
evening.
We are going to increase the hard disk capacity shortly also.
I'll keep everyone informed how it turns out.
Thanks for your advice everyone!!!

Need HELP!
Our Win 2000 server is crashing overnight. This the third morning
already that we have to force the server to shut down by pulling the
plug, otherwise it will not respond. After restarting it may work the
entire work day and then the next morning the same situation again. I
am suspecting low hard drive space and we are working on it to
increase it. Any other possibilities?
Thank you in advance.

It could also be bad memory or a bad fan on the motherboard...both have
happened to me in the past. What is running at night? Your back-up,
anything else? Are you getting the "blue screen of death?" How much drive
space do you have on your c:? If it gets down in the 50-100 mgb area, that
will probably crash it. Does your event viewer give you any hints?

Mike, this scenario brings back bad memories. Other possibilities are Bad
Memory modules, or even a bad Mother Board. I had a new server built, QDI
mother board, P4, DDR memory ?? the ones where you need "continuity chips in
empty memory sockets?. I eventually found that the mother board was bad
(had trouble somehow communicating between pairs of memory banks). Took out
one pair of chips and replaced with 'continuity chips' and worked fine.
Also found later that Progress database software had
compatibility/performance problems with QDI mother boards and eventually
built new server with Intel motherboard.

Check the event viewer and run any diagnostic tools for your particular brand server. Be sure to download the latest tools from the manufacturer web site. Between these two you should be able to diagnose what the issue is.

The exact same thing happened to us. Turns out it was a bad patch
from Microsoft. Had to reinstall Windows 2000, and spent a good 17
hours in the process. No fun.

Butch,

One error in System Log seems troublesome:
"The previous system shutdown at 1:10:57 AM on 6/8/2005 was unexpected."
This error repeats for each day.

One thing you might want to check for is the log properties, do they
overwrite on days or as needed?

I have changed all of mine to as needed. If It cannot write to the event
log it restarts the server :)

Mike,

Does the error repeat at the same time every night? If so, it is most
likely not a hardware related issue. I've seen systems crash repeatedly
each night due to a Veritas conflict with a Windows patch.

Butch,

One error in System Log seems troublesome:
"The previous system shutdown at 1:10:57 AM on 6/8/2005 was unexpected."
This error repeats for each day.

Does this error occur while your backup is running ?

I had a server that would run just fine all day - until backup time. It
would start the backup and run for awhile then - blam - reboot. After many
days and days of troubleshooting - I replaced the server RAM and problem was
solved.

Besides - RAM is relatively cheap - and if it doesn't fix it - you can use
it to upgrade your replacement server.

Good Luck - I feel your pain !

Also, if the shutdown is at the same time each day, that could be a
clue...what is scheduled for that time on the network? Backup or disk
clean-up, anything like that which could be going awry.

We had a guy who flipped the circuit breaker off for one whole side of the
building EVERY night -- finally the battery back-ups didn't work
anymore...you know the rest.

That event would be logged after it rebooted. You should look at the
previous messages for some kind of clue. If nothing shows up, then the
posts by the other users sound like a good direction to follow.

Hi Mike

I have a site where this was recently happening to a 2003 exchange server. It was rebooting itself every morning at 7:00am. Microsoft have informed us that there is an exchange hot fix for it that is not available on there website. I don't know whether this is of any help or you have exchange installed on it?
