I'm assuming you are trying Service Pack 3.


Also investigate applications that may be running in the background.

Disable Norton or McAfee Autoprotect and try that for a while and see what
happens. Sometimes those products really can reek havoc on a system with a
incompatible BIOS.

Speaking of which upgrade the BIOS.

Lastly, make a virus boot disk, and check for virus' that way. There may be
a virus residing in your memory or boot sector of the hard drive.

Try those things out and see what happens.

Ok, I try to keep on topic, but I am checking to see if anyone else has seen
this type of problem. I have a Win2k box that corrupts the
"wnint/system32/config/system" file every few weeks. Sometimes I can run a
chkdsk and fix it, other times I have to reinstall. Repair options never
seem to help. I have replaced the HD, thinking it was a problem with the
drive, but same problem. It is always the same file as well. Any
