OT - workstations from Dell

>What was the config for the 400sc at $ 279?
>I just priced one on Dell's website and was way above that...

I was trying to go that route to replace the wife's home PC back before
x-mas. The price was figuring in a $200 or so mail-in rebate. Plus you
have to pare down to 128MB, no O.S., no display, minimal warranty, etc.

I found the Dimension home / small biz econo package was better: for about
$409 (after rebate) you got a 17" monitor, 256MB, P4, O.S., CD-RW, maybe
some other goodies.

In the last 6 months I have had a lot of difficulty with the Dell
systems that we have purchased. These problems have included wrong
Operating Systems being loaded, problems with chipsets, etc.
What I need to know is what is the appropriate type of workstation we
need to have here at our company in order to run the programs we
utilize here at Microplastics. The GX270's we bought have been
nothing but grief. Is it the chipset, the motherboard or what? I
was told we could not get Office 2000 Professional loaded on them
that they did not support that suite of software on those specific
Optiplexes. What do all of you use to run Office, Vantage, and
miscellaneous other programs? I am just wondering what the
appropriate "business workstations" are for us to be using. We need
to order more systems and my boss thinks it has become an incredible
waste of resources considering the hours I have spent building,
rebuilding and troubleshooting. Thanks in advance for your time.
I had an issue recently (it was a Gateway notebook) where I unloaded the XP that came with it and loaded Win2K (because Gateway could no longer sell Win2K). It kept powering off and rebooting for no apparent reason. After getting nowhere with Gateway (they claimed my OS swap voided all warranties and tech support) I discovered in the BIOS a setting for "Plug & Play OS" with two options - XP and Windows 2000. Of course XP was selected so I changed it and the problems went away. Moral of the story I guess is that they so finely tune the motherboards and BIOS to the configure OS that any changes can goof it up. I would have been in a pickle if I had wanted to load Win98.

I use only PCs specifically configured by myself and built at a local "whitebox" outfit that I am very happy with ( www.cadan.com ). All are now loaded (by me) with Win2K Pro and contain no Proprietary garbage that the big outfits like to load. Users run Office 2000 mostly besides Vantage.

Hi Lois,

We at General Sheet Metal Works have been buying Dell Optoplexes. I have
had to replace hard drives twice.

I order them with the next day service. I believe the quality of the
Dell has fallen off lately.

I don't know of a better choice. I don't have enough time to build up
P/C's myself.

I order Dell P/C's with W2K. In fact just this week I ordered one I hope
it comes in as W2k.

Good Luck,

John Mansfield

Someone here mentioned Dell's PowerEdge 400SC for $279.00. I've been buying them up. They dont come with an OS. I like that because the previous IT guy purchased retail Win2K lic. The disk that comes with the 400SC makes it real easy to load Win2k in about 45 min. I couldn't be more pleased with them. I even purchased one for home.

Lois - We run Office XP on GX270's. Other than the usual Microsluffed bugs
in the Office software, they're OK. We use them for everything except CAD.
We have Windows 2000 throughout the network.

Todd - re the fine-tuned Mainboards - thank Pope Bill I for the unopen
architecture. The quality of Dells is definitely disintegrating. And then
you need to speak 6 languages and have a degree in Computer Engineering to
call their tech support. Too bad they seem to be the best there is out
there. I don't like where all this is going. The world is more dependent
on technology every day. And the quality and support get exponentially
worse by the minute.

This is a promo they run on several occasions
Usaully $499 with $200 in reabtes
Usually a Celeron processor
