Any BPMs sending email synchronously vs. asynchronously?

Mark W.
Is it just me, or is there some interaction between Outlook & Vantage.

I notice when Outlook is busy (perhaps doing a background send/receive, etc.,) Vantage windows freeze.

The opposite is true as well. If a Vantage window is in 'hourglass mode' doing something, Outlook freezes.

I don't get this with other Office apps - just Outlook.

???

Do you have Infoworker installed?

No Info Worker installed.

I'm starting to think Outlook and some application layer of Vantage shares at least one performance impacting DLL.

Thanks guys.

The only thing I know that has any possibility of sharing dll's and
resources with Outlook and Office is InfoWorker and Portal.

Is Vantage and Exchange on the same server?

I'd be curious myself if there was something else. Keep us posted.

Do these things happen frequently or intermittently? To all users with
Vantage or only some? All OS's or only Vista or XP? Everyone off one
router/hub or the whole organization?

If a user/workstation has frequent issues, out of curiosity set up a
constant ping to the Vantage and/or Exchange server(s) and direct it to
a text file: ping {server} -t >pingtest.txt Let it run for a few
hours in hopes of something locking up during that time.

Analyze it to see if response times drop or perhaps connectivity drops
during this period where Outlook and Vantage lock up. I can tell you it
only takes a couple dropped replies for Vantage to lock up.

Vantage and Outlook are both resource hungry, transaction oriented
applications that as soon as a small network anomaly or "blip" occurs,
they both scream for attention. Perhaps it is coincidental. Perhaps
not. ;-)

Good luck.

I would really hope that Vantage and Exchange are not on the same server. That will cause multiple problems and some server issues as well.
As a Network Engineer I will suggest you always keep Exchange separate from all other server processes except DNS and DHCP of course. Having a database working on top of Exchange has to be VERY cumbersome for the Server, if you are truly using both on one server

Thanks Vic. All prudent advice on ways to test & perhaps narrow down the possibilites.

We have seperate servers for everything. Only one Vista install being tested by one of our IT guys. The rest all XP with gobs of memory (2-5Gb depending upon the user) & power users using dual screen video processors.

Shop floor PCs (for MES) are all Terminal Server.

The building has an all fiber backbone with pretty reliable 100Mb connections on each client. There are occasional router flake outs - but IT detects and resolves in minutes when they occur.

I was going to start simple (at the client) and find a Vantage application action/Outlook condition that consistently seems to have some interaction.

Then I'll pop up task manager and create the condition to see if one specific system process gets crazy levels of activity.

Then I'll create the same condition with Vantage closed/Outlook open and then Outlook closed/Vantage open to see if, individually they hit hard on the same system process.

I have to look and see how much 3.0 .Net outlook is using. Both apps must be heavy messaging service users I would think.

That may be the issue as it seems the interaction occurs on apps that have at least some customization. (More impetus for us to move some of the customized behavior to BPMs where possible if this proves to be a contributing factor).

I'll check the Epicor site for any references to this observed behavior in a sec. (No need to re-invent the wheel if it is a little known issue that has a known solution.)

Thanks again Vic. Very helpful.

Rob

Also look at the Event Viewer to see if any errors pop up on your Exchange Server or the DB server. The way that Vantage interacts with Exchange is on alerts to Users and such. I would look to see how the communication between the DB server and the Exchange server are. Just rule out the easy stuff first. If Vantage is having a heart attack with Exchange in trying to commmunicate, I would look at Exchange first. Vantage's protocol is very simple and shouldn't interfere with Exchange in any way. it sounds to me like the PDC is having a security issue with the DB server. There are a few reasons why the issue you described is happening and none of them are uncomon. But they all start with Exchange, not Vantage.
