Regarding Shirley Graver's question:

It doesn't matter what sort of attachment it is - internal vs. external,
graphics vs. text. vs. executable, small vs. large size files - the hang
always happens. I wouldn't necessarily upgrade your operating systems as a
way to avoid this problem, though.

The problem was explained as the Vantage splash screen still running though
it should have closed after the user logs into Vantage. On NT, you can go to
the Task Manager and see a process out there named "vantage.exe" still
running in the background - that's the splash screen program. So I'm sure
this problem affects NT users too, it's just more pronounced on 95/98, at
least at our plant.

You can kill the "vantage.exe" process in NT and keep going without
disrupting your Vantage session, but I haven't been able to successfully use
that approach on 95/98 machines. Knowing that this is pretty much a
universal problem for 5.0 users, though, should be a red flag to anyone
considering an upgrade to 5.0 in the near future. I'll keep on Tech Support
about this, now that I know I'm not alone.

Saw some mention of this on the list already, so perhaps one of you already
on Vantage 5.0 has found a way to deal with this:

Ever since our upgrade to 5.0, we have noticed that our Windows 95/98 PCs
hang and need to be rebooted if you try to open an email attachment in
Outlook 98 (attachments open fine if Vantage was never started).

Vantage Tech Support acknowledges this has something to do with their
software and they have the issue under investigation, but I was wondering if
anyone else was suffering from the same problem? We are on patch 306, but
I'm told patch 312 doesn't remedy this problem, either. It would be
interesting to know if this affected everyone who upgraded to 5.0 (strength
in numbers and all that). Thanks!

Are these hangs occuring ONLY on win95 win98 and are they internal,external
or ANY email attachement. The bulk of our systems are NT4.0 those that
arent could be upgraded to NT easily. We are planning to go to 5.0 the
weekend of the 24th or the weekend of the 31st, depending on year end close.
