PA System

Actually I looked into the user group for Nortel Networks, is anyone here
apart of that network. They are very large and formal. Seem to have nice
user conventions, etc... But as with SBC Ameritech who sold me the system
the trouble was in finding someone who actually knew how to program or
configure a Nortel Norstar when it was integrated into the desktop. Desktop
meaning MS Outlook.

We just put in a Nortel BCM and I had the paging system replaced as part of
the phone install. Doesn't help much unless your phone install is fairly
recent but the installer tested and adjusted it while he was here doing the
phone.

While I am not familiar with the interface to the phone system, I had done
PA work years ago. I had a home-made interface to the phone system at my
last office (you probably don't want to know about that), but my PA side
worked well.

We used Radio Shack amps and their high-efficiency horn speakers. The wiring
used 70 Volt transformers and lots of 10 W speakers which simplified wiring
and allowed some volume adjustment for individual speakers. It worked well
for about $250 -$300.

If you can get a bigger budget, I'd look into a paging system that adjusts
the volume according to ambient sound levels, so factory workers can hear
pages during high noise periods but not get startled (and possibly injuring
themselves) when the noise level is low.

Also, avoid paging speakers in an office environment. Use intercoms (usually
built into the phone) unless paging can't be avoided. If you happen to be
near a paging speaker while on the phone, it sounds like (to the person on
the other end of the phone) like you are at a busy car dealership.

One last suggestion: Get delayed page if possible. What this does is allow a
person to say their message into their phone, hang up, then hear it over the
speakers. The biggest benefit is elimination of feedback when paging from a
phone too near a paging speaker.

There's my $2.25 worth...

Patrick,

We use products form Bogen. They are supposed to be number one in the
field.

They have a product called a feedback terminator which allows you to page
from phones in your shop and not have any feedback problems. It uses a 100%
solid state time delay mechanism. They also have speakers that will sense
the ambient noise level and adjust their volume accordingly. We use their
amplifier, speakers and feedback terminator hooked to a Toshiba DK phone
system.

We just put in a Nortel BCM and I had the paging system replaced as part of
