Packaging requirements

We normally have this information on our Process cards which are linked
through Vantage document control. While I do have a unit per package
amount in a user field, I am discovering that Packaging covers more than
units per package. In basic QS and customer requirements, it covers
everything from skids to labels to contents to ASN's and all the
subsystems to make things work. So some jobs have a very long and
detailed process sheet. Yesterday I received a label spec from an
important customer that was 24 pages long. Thank goodness we aren't
doing any military, the size of that spec is measured in kilo's.

On 4.0 we used a user defined field on the part to define the standard
qty per "carton" (or whatever we whipped in). Now in 5.2 there is a
parts/container field on the part master that gets printed on our
shipping version of the traveler. But as far as other detailed
packaging instructions we use memos. If a box (or carton) gets packed
containing less than standard the box labeling RB report can override
the standard via qty a filter when the labels are run.

We have been using the comment area of the material section to note
how product should be packaged...number of pieces per roll in the
comment section of the core material and number of pieces per carton
in the comment area of the carton material, etc.

I'm wondering if there is a better place to designate this
information...a field in Vantage that is specifically designed to
hold packaging information, or perhaps a sharing of some ideas as to
how others handle packaging requirements.

We put it in the shipping operation so that it shows in on the travelor.
