Page File/NT 4.0

Les-

I'm only running V3 on a dual P2-333 with 320mb RAM, but I have page set
for 160mb on first vol and an additional 800mb on 2nd vol. This is
equivalent to 3x RAM, but it's still on the "conservative" side. Isolating
the vast majority of page to a vol reserved for nothing but the page is
advantageous ONLY if that vol is a separate physical drive. Performance
gains garnered from setting page to a RAIDed volume are lost if the volume
is NOT a separate physical drive.

I said "conservative." Some workstation apps (such as SolidWorks) REQUIRE
a page that is between 5x and 6x RAM, i.e., if the workstation is equipped
with 768mb RAM, then the page should be set for 4608mb. Most first volumes
I have seen are set as 2gb, with the balance of the physical drive set as
the second partition. The W2Kpro operating system (only speaking from my
experience) does not allow a page on the second vol in excess of 4gb, so
the max page can only be 4gb plus whatever you can squeeze onto the first vol.

All that said, don't discount the -B setting for Vantage.

I'm getting a pop indictating "almost out of virtual memory" with a
suggestion to increase the Page file. The NT4 Server only has a page
file set on the root directory. Nothing is set for the directory
where Vantage 5.1 is installed. It's a dual 700 machine with a gig of
RAM. This is not my area of expertise. Any recommendation on
settings? Should I just increase the root directory (Only 795MB
available) or should I also set the Vantage directory's page file?
There is like 15 Gigs available there. Thanks - Les
Les,
What is your -B setting for Vantage? Sometimes a number too large can cause your Server to run out of Virtual memory eventually.

There is like 15 Gigs available there. Thanks - Les

Hey Les,

It is prudent to keep your swap file on another volume, other than where
your OS is installed.

For example. My server has 1GB of RAM. I set my SWAP file to 2MB Intial Size
and 2MB Maximum Size, for the partition housing my Operating System. You
require at least this or else NT will not be able to write to the dump log
file.

I have a second partition which I use only for my swap file. Here I have set
my Initial Size to 2048 MB and 2048 MB for my Maximum size. You can play
with this. Microsoft recommends that the SWAP file should be One and half
times the size of Physical Memory. For myself I beefed it up to Two times
the amount of Physical Memory.

I hope this helps.

Depending on how your drive is partitioned, this could be a difficult
proposition. Our NT server was configured in a similar manner. You are
gong to have to use a utility like Server Magic to work with those
partitions. Secondly, if you have a second partition being used that
partition has to be removed before you can resize the boot partition. This
can be very tricky especially if its used extensively. You'll could be
faced with broken links and a host of other nagging problems to you and your
users. I saved doing this until I was ready to migrate to a new server and
was able to move everything. On the other hand, you are in danger of having
system files overwritten if your server by chance gets hit by an unusually
heavy load all at once. Also, if you don't have a suitable IT person to
perform these operations for you, RENT ONE, you should probably put this on
the top of your list to get fixed.
