Parameter select statement in Crystal

Ah, now I see. It's case sensitive. I wonder if there is a way around the case sensitivity of the command. Otherwise I think it will work the best.

Troy,

I think you can use the "In String" operator to accomplish your
objective. Here is the relevant text from Crystal Help:

In String operator
Basic and Crystal syntax.

Usage
x in y

Tests for the presence of string x in string y.

Examples
The following examples are applicable to both Basic and Crystal
syntax:

"Elm" in {customer.ADDRESS1}

TRUE, where {customer.ADDRESS1} is "1335 Elm Street".

"Elm" in {customer.ADDRESS1}

TRUE, where {customer.ADDRESS1} is "1335 Elmer Street".

"elm" in {file.MOTTO}

FALSE, where {file.MOTTO} = "Feel more energy".

(The "el" ending "feel" and the "m" beginning the word "more" are
separated by a space which itself counts as an element.)

"el m" in {file.MOTTO}

TRUE, where {file.MOTTO} = "Feel more energy".

The search string "el m" this time contains the space between the l
and the m, which allows for a perfect match.

Note: The "in" operator can also be used to test for the presence
of a string in a text range. For example, "V5B" in "V0A" to "V9Z".

Hi gang,

I'm looking for a way in Crystal to for the user to type just part of the
Vendor Name as input. Crystal would then bring up and vendor names that
match.
For instance, if the user entered, "sam", then Crystal would find matches
like "samuel", "sammy", "samantha", "chissam", etc.

It should be a piece of cake, but I can't get it....

Dan,
Thanks for the reply. Using wildcards is one option I am looking into. I would like, however, for the user to not have to enter wildcards, just a phrase. Then Crystal would do the rest.

I never heard of that function before. After reading help (Use this function whenever you want to locate records based on two or more field values that are spelled differently yet sound alike. This function can also be used to find customer names that have been misspelled.) it doesn't look appear to be what I'm looking for. Thanks for the suggestion.

It's a neat little function. But it translates entire words into an
abbreviated phonetic representation. Names like Johnson and Jensen would
translate into the same code, so a search for one would get both. But it
doesn't help with partial matches like he asked.

Troy, I neglected to read your entire request. Perhaps this method would
work.

Create a parameter field "promptvendor" to receive user input.

Created a formula field, call it SelectVendor = if
InStr({Vendor.Name},{?promptvendor}) > 0 then true else false

Then edit the select filter to include @SelectVendor similar to below (this
won't make sense in the example below but illustrates how to do it.) Note:
this could cause a for a lengthy query but will work.

{Company.Company} = "SN2" and
{OrderRel.OpenRelease} and
{OrderDtl.OpenLine} and
{OrderHed.OpenOrder} and
{Customer.SalesRepCode} startswith ["3", "7"] and
{@SelectVendor}

Troy,

I think you can use the "In String" operator to accomplish your
objective. Here is the relevant text from Crystal Help:

In String operator
Basic and Crystal syntax.

Usage
x in y

Tests for the presence of string x in string y.

Examples
The following examples are applicable to both Basic and Crystal
syntax:

"Elm" in {customer.ADDRESS1}

TRUE, where {customer.ADDRESS1} is "1335 Elm Street".

"Elm" in {customer.ADDRESS1}

TRUE, where {customer.ADDRESS1} is "1335 Elmer Street".

"elm" in {file.MOTTO}

FALSE, where {file.MOTTO} = "Feel more energy".

(The "el" ending "feel" and the "m" beginning the word "more" are
separated by a space which itself counts as an element.)

"el m" in {file.MOTTO}

Troy,

I tested the solution I sent to you. Unfortunately, it seems the InStr
function is case sensitive. There is also InstrRev function which searches
the string in reverse order and will accept an argument to indicate case
sensitivity.

Something like this should work:

if instrrev ({vendor.name},{promptvendor},-1,1) > 0 then true else false

the -1 says to start at last character, the 1 makes the search case
insensitive.

Let me know if this works for you.

That would work if they entered the beginning of the name, but how about
if they wanted to enter a word in the middle of the vendor name?

Troy,

Use something similar to:

{Vendor.Name} startswith ?vendorname

Dan,
Thanks for the reply. Using wildcards is one option I am looking into.
I
would like, however, for the user to not have to enter wildcards, just a
phrase. Then Crystal would do the rest.

Hello Troy

I have never played with what you're trying to do, but this might
work?

Hi gang,

I'm looking for a way in Crystal to for the user to type just
part of
the
Vendor Name as input. Crystal would then bring up and vendor names
that
match.
For instance, if the user entered, "sam", then Crystal would find
matches
like "samuel", "sammy", "samantha", "chissam", etc.

It should be a piece of cake, but I can't get it....

Troy

I was just trying this and getting no results. I'll try your other suggestion.

{Company.Company} = "SN2" and
{OrderRel.OpenRelease} and
{OrderDtl.OpenLine} and
{OrderHed.OpenOrder} and
{Customer.SalesRepCode} startswith ["3", "7"] and
{@SelectVendor}
