Parameter with RB

Have the "Change Report Filter" box checked by default when you set up the
report with Custom Report Links. When the employee selects the print
button, the filter box will be displayed and updated.

Subject: [Vantage] Parameter with RB

I am starting to use RB and am not sure how to create a parameter so that
when a user wants to print the report, they are prompted to enter the data
they want to see. Any help?

Thanks,

Lori

Lori,
RB is not so friendly as Crystal in regards to parameters. Basically you use the FILTER option when designing the report. The filter icon looks like a funnel on the toolbar. After you enter your filters in designer, then you put the report into Vantage in the Custom Report Links Maintenance. When you add a new Report, there is a check box that says "Change Report Filters". By checking this box, a user will be presented with the filter list that was set up in the report. You will have to instruct your users in the proper syntax for report filters. It's rather un-userfriendly to say the least.

I've never seen a good way to do this from reports run from within Vantage.
I think there is a way from outside Vantage (or VB Forms) via .p routines
and the command line attributes for running RB but that is WAY beyond my
level.

So I usually pass parameters via the filters. Even if it is not a real
filter. For example to prompt whether they want details I will create a
function field called "Details" and set it to be 'XXX' then in the filter
have one that selects for "Details <> True" (never mind that the <> does not
make sense really - I don't really want to filter anything). Then using the
REPORT-FILTER() function (via an aggregate into a String field) I brute
force parse out the value (True or False) as a string and then use this to
make a logical that controls whether a band line gets printed or not.

Not pretty, in fact a real kludge, but it works. I use a similar technique
for date ranges (except actually filter in this case) and print the date
range on the heading.

When you put a RB report on a Vantage menu check mark the 'Change Filters'
box so that it comes up by default. Then the users don't have to do
anything to see the filter selections. Only downside is frisky users that
try to add their own filters ('Why don't I get anything when I filter on
CustNum?") and they don't understand what they are doing. Could lead to
seriously misleading information.

Good luck,
-Todd C.

PS - Any bets whether this will appear today? Yahoo looks to be about 3 hrs
late. I sent out a question at 11:05 that has not shown yet. Arrrgh!
