Part Material Question

Hi – yes we have faced that issue here.

There are two possible undesirable outcomes we saw:

1) That the ability to track later issues down (eg warranty) would be a little more difficult (as it doesn't become immediately apparent in Job Tracker).
2) The precedent that it sets – and the possible downwards spiral of creating a culture where it's ok to substitute without leaving a trail of information.

Therefore we decided we would not do it.

Instead we would replace the original part on the job with a placeholder part number, with a custom description briefly explaining what's happened, and add the new material to the job.

I can definitely see how our solution would not be appropriate for every manufacturing circumstance – but I guess the lesson is really that you need to develop business rules that don't compromise themselves.
