Subject: [Vantage] V 4.0 - Basic Security

Rick,

Security on the server is pretty straight forward.

* When you share the EPICOR root directory - specify "Domain Users" full on
the Share security. This will block anyone "ON" your network that has NOT
been authenticated by your NT PDC/BDC.

* For all directories within EPICOR set the security to:
* Administrators - FULL control
* Backup Operators - FULL control
* Domain Users - READ only - everyone can read the contents but NO one
cannot update or delete ANYTHING !!!

FYI - Users do not need read-write or full access to the databases.
Progress on the server updates the database - not the users.

What you are trying to avoid is the hacker on your shop floor who tries to
delete the Vantage directory.

Also, if you are just installing V 4.0 then I'd recommend the following.
* Backup your Vantage server 100 % to tape # 1
* Install Progress and patch from the original CD
* Install Vantage and patch from the original CD
* Backup Vantage to tape # 2
* Run schema changes
* Backup Vantage to tape # 3
* Install current Progress patch
* Install current Vantage patch
* Run current schema changes
* Backup Vantage to tape # 4
* THEN install your client PC's with Vantage and Progress

Also, check with Vantage tech support before you start - they may have
updated installation instructions.

Subject: RE: [Vantage] Progress patches

Thanks Todd. I'm just now getting around to installing 4.0 on a test server
and was curious what I needed to do since multiple Progress patches have
come out since the install CD. So far so good installing 4.0 on the DEC
Alpha machine. I just need to wait 12 days while it converts our 900+mb
database - Yikes!

Do you happen to have the NT security settings for 4.0 and 3.0 for that
matter? I want to be sure I get permissions for 4.0 set up correctly and
will probably change 3.0 in the meantime because we had an incident last
Friday of the bm directory getting moved.

Thanks,

Rick

We no longer allow attachments to files. To access/share Report Files,
please go to the following link: http://www.egroups.com/files/vantage/
(Note: If this link does not work for you the first time you try it, go to
www.egroups.com, login and be sure to save your password, choose My Groups,
choose Vantage, then choose Files. If you save the password, the link above
will work the next time you try it.)
