Performance problems

We have encountered such problems too.

Progress would slow to a crawl, with no apparent reasons. When that
happens, going into Progress Explorer, and restarting progress db
usually will fix things up.

Checked the server, plenty of ram, processor cycle available.
5 users logged in at the time the error occured.

We are having serious performance problems with v6.10.543. We
recently ran the database dump and load (optimization) and that
didn't help.

1) Sometimes it takes minutes for a shipping transaction to complete
after clicking the 'shipped checkbox'.
2) People are often terminated abnormally from Vantage while printing
without an error message.
3) Sometimes a simple Part tracker takes one to four minutes to
complete or the screen flickers and user is terminated without error.
4) We often get record locking messages although there users are not
in the same record.
5) We have numerous sysprogress users in the connected users screen.

Funny, just now I was viewing connected users and was terminated
abnormally without an error message.

Has anybody had such trouble and how did you resolve.

We've not seen all those issues at once but over time, here and there, most of them have popped up. At a guess it sounds like it might be a chain reaction or cascade of issues stemming from some root cause. Like the locking issues resulting from phantom sessions left by terminations that were in turn caused by printing issues or such.

I had a situation recently where one person had Vantage terminate and (leave an entry group locked) every day when the person in the adjacent PC powered off her PC. Nothing would resolve it. She (the one terminating) has a new PC and the problem went away. I chalked it up to network issues.

In fact right after moving Vantage to a new server (and upgrading to 543 in the process) we experienced a LOT of strange network issues (including extreme slowness) which were only resolved by installing a new switch )from older 3COM unmanaged to new HP-ProCurve managed). If you have another (fairly new) switch to move a few people to and see if they work better it might be worth trying. I never figured out a reason...due to having enough other fires to deal with without investigating why things now work. I always thought it was the new server but perhaps it was something in 543.

Another thing that often helps the printing related terminations is to clear the users' mfgwrk61 folder. There are several ways to automate this before starting Vantage or give the users a batch file & desktop icon to run while not in Vantage.

Reinstalling the client (after uninstalling Progress Client) sometimes helps as well.

Thanks Todd.

I tried the batch file for one person who has a lot of printing
trouble. No word yet.

On the phone with Epicor, they had me make some changes to the db
config # of servers, users, etc., which he said were set way too
high. Now everything is worse. It takes a minute or two just to view
a selection in the quote screen (that is before you can even choose
whether you want to view by Quote/Customer/Etc.).

If anybody has has similar trouble and resolved it via the db config,
I'd like to hear from you.

We're on 6.10.543 with 22 users and about half of them using ODBC.

Thanks,

Randy Weber
