Performance Tuning Story to Share

Quoting from the Sysadmin Reference Manual -spin entry:

" On mutli-processor machines, try a value of 2,000. If this causes too much CPU usage, reduce the value. If you have many fast processors, a value as high as 10,000 might be effective".

There is also a note on how to evaluate -spin values using promon (to long to quote here).

I converted to Morocco a couple of weeks ago. My system slowed down. I
noticed a 4 to 7 second delay when loading data entry screens. Under Rio I
had no noticeable delay.

Hardware:
Dell 2300 Server, Duel Pent III Processors, 512mb RAM, duel 18gb drives
Mirrored.
C: drive was 4gb for the Operating System. (NT 4)
D: drive was 16gb for Vantage.
Nothing else was running on this server.

I also added the "- Spin 2" parameter which I had not used under RIO so I
was hoping for a performance gain.
I had my "- B" parameter set to 30000 (120mb) under Rio and increased it to
60000 (240mb) under Morocco but still had a delay when loading job entry,
order entry, quote entry, etc...

My solution after many many other attempts was:
Under Control Panel/System/Performance/Virtual Memory
The original configuration for the systems was:
C: minimum 512 / Maximum 1024
D: blank

I changed D: drive to the same as C: Drive
C: minimum 512 / Maximum 1024
D: minimum 512 / Maximum 1024

Now performance is as good as what I had running RIO.
By the way six of my shop floor data stations are 60mhz, 32mb RAM, Win98.

I'm not sure where 2 came from, the processors are 550mhz, I'm having Jay
Erickson look at my database log file for other improvements, thanks for
pointing this out.

How did you arrive at a value of 2 for the -spin parameter? How fast are
your processors?
