Hi,

Has anyone else had people want to look at their expense accounts and
had them run into the Periodic Postins issue? Drilling into the
details in Chart Tracker is painful.

Is there either a better way or a report that anyone would be willing
to share with me so that our managers can get a better handle on their
expenses?

Thanks

Amy Powell
I was wondering if anyone could explain how periodic postings work. The
accountant and I have noticed that items end up posting in accounts and when
you review to see what the posting is, it says periodic posting. I believe
these happen due to some reports being run. I would appreciate any help with
this subject.

Sincerely,

Mary, this is your COGS/WIP reconciliation that creates the periodic postings. All other postings (AR Invoice Entry, AP Invoice Entry, Journal Entries, Supplier Payments, Cash Receipts) are automatically posted to the GL from your batch when you click on Actions/Post.
Â
You should run your COGS/WIP if you want to see your inventory,COGS,WIP accounts updated during the month or, you can wait until month end to run after you have reviewed your WIP Reports and made sure that all jobs have been reported correctly (materials, quantities, labor). The only difference is that if you wait until month end certain reports such as the Gross Margin report will not reflect the latest margins until you run this process

Just an FYI,

We also had the same issue come up with Accounting however we could
follow the movement of the dollars through the accounts but could not
figure out the "why's & wherefore's". We contacted Support and
development regarding a customization to try to put some logical
statement in place other than "Periodic Posting" and got a major turn
down claiming that the customization would be cost prohibitive. We
asked for a library of conditions that cause the "Periodic Posting"
entry and were also told that there was no Rosetta Stone.

While I agree that the Periodic Posting process is not obviously transparent, it is not that hard to audit what the system has done. All the Periodic Posting items come from the Inventory Journal. You can open Journal Tracker in General Ledger General Operations. Select IJ for the journal. Retrieve the detail for the period. Retrieve the detail for the journal you are interested in. Then, retrieve the cost transaction detail. You can drill down to the individual labor transaction, so there is no question exactly where the postings came from.

Although we may not be able to figure out the "logic" in the Epicor programming structure, at least we can verify that what it did was correct (or analyze and understand what it did incorrectly).

Bob,

That sounds like something you could 'catch' via a BAM (to figure out what is actually triggering it - possibly multiple things as you pointed out).

Then you could perhaps force each condition that triggers it (with tracing on) and (finally) write a BPM (or a few if needed) to co-update any handy user definable fields in one of the tables involved... Update the UD field with whatever additional detail you need (beyond the too generic "Periodic Posting" char field record value).

Is it necessary to have more info for ALL possible triggered updates or could you live with 80/20 rule and just trap & UD field clarify the most common triggers?
