Perspectives feedback

Epicor 9 will be a n attempt at a unified software with Manufacturing,
distribution and service all in one. Imagine Vantage, IScalia and
Enterprise in one package. Licensing will turn on the features you
need. This is an industry wide movement. Today, we are do some of all
three type of business functions. Epicor appears to be the first.
Microsoft Dynamics published ii is going that way.
I was unable to make it to Perspectives this year so was wondering if
anyone had any feedback of note related to Vantage. Also, how was
Orlando as a Perspectives location?

Epicor 9 is supposed be released in 9-12 months. Orlando had its ups
and downs. Downs: boring in between the end of classes and evening
functions, food wasn't as good, meeting space layout wasn't as good and
hotel wasn't as nice. Ups: since there wasn't much else to do most
people congregated around one area for extra networking, more room for
hall of solutions and better for families.

I pretty much agree. If you weren't going to a theme park or Down
Town Disney the hotel would've been boring. I brought my wife and
daughter along this year and we had a great time. There was a link
through the Perspectives page to get discounted theme park tickets
and "After 2PM" or "After 4PM" convention passes to the parks. We
went down a day early and stayed a day late and I skipped out on the
Wine and Cheese reception to spend an evening at the Magic Kingdom
with my family.

Labs were good, but I think they could work harder on trying to find
better real-world examples. I'm excited to begin testing 8.03.400
soon. BPM looks like a great tool and its FREE!

The Greenspan "interview" with George Klaus went fast and was a
little disappointing from a former Econ grad's point of view. They
didn't talk much Economics.

The biggest problem with the hotel was the distance between the large
meeting rooms for the main assembly and the smaller rooms and the
amount of congestion there was moving the people upstairs/escalators.

It was very warm and humid down there, put the rain stayed away
except for a brief shower on Thursday.

I'm not big on casino's so it was a welcome change for me, and my
daughter sure loved it, but it was expensive.

Next year's Perspectives is back at Casear's Palace in Las Vegas.

I
I thought Perspectives went very well. It was pretty well attended but there were fewer Vantage people (it seemed) and many more Enterprise and iScala folks than I had noticed last year. Many of the labs and session topics were repetitive to last year but seemed to make more sense to me this time around. Perhaps it just takes a couple tries for it to really sink in for me. The best info (as usual) was from other users and there seemed to be a lot of heads nodding in agreement about 8.03.400 being both a performance and a bug reduction improvement over earlier 8.x release and patch levels. The consensus opinion I was seeing amongst people working on or planning migration from earlier versions was that 8.03.400 is fast enough (or not overly slow) and stable enough to be safe to migrate to (for us fearful types).

I found the System Administration 1/2 day class on Sunday to be very much worthwhile in firming up some conceptual understanding for 8.x. This and several other admin and performance type sessions seem to have benefited from a larger pool of experienced sites (mostly new sites, not migrators) and Epicor personnel better understanding "real world" issues. There was a session for migrating to 8.03.400 but the focus was on doing this from earlier 8.x releases. One of the biggest irritations I have is the lack of support and tools for migrating from 6.1. Tehre was a little info here and there but the gist of it is still "hire an Epicor consultant". On the other hand there is supposed to be some resources on EpicWeb and I will admit I have not had time to browse them since returning.

It was not so much Orlando as Disney as the location. In 2001 Perspectives was in Orlando but "outside the world". The trouble with Disney is that it is a money sucking behemoth with a virtual monopoly. Everything was very expensive....Disney owns or controls all sales...from bottled water to sunglasses to restaurants. And transportation outside "the world" is costly enough to make it not worthwhile. At least at Caesars in Las Vegas there is competition nearby. Especially in restaurant choices. All that said the Dolphin and Swan hotels (for those who got in) are very nice hotels as long as "the boss" is paying. The meeting rooms were typical conference center but a little scattered around more than at Caesars. Maybe it was just being on three different floors and our not being able to use escalators hunting down elevators was a chore.

For me the whole thing was very much worth it and made me a lot more comfortable about being closer to being able to migrate to 8.03.400 from 6.1.

I attended the session and found it quite helpful. It covered Object
Explorer, Script Editor, Sub Process Menus, Context Menu Maintenance,
User Defined tables, Picture Box control, Embedded Dashboard Panal
Wizard & Parent-Child UD tables. I don't recall any mention of a 3 day
seminar but one of the presenters said there will be a document covering
the "Embedded Dashboard Panal Wizard" on EpicWeb approximately November
15th. I took a look at the Development Tools Guide at the registration
counter and it looked pretty good. We will be obaining a copy for our
company.

Interesting feedback. Does anyone know if the conversion from 8 to 9
will be as significant as the change from 6.1 to 8?

From a planning perspective we're planning on doing the 6.1 to 8 upgrade
in FY 2008. However, if shortly after we will have another large
upgrade and learning curve we may wait to go from 6.1 to 9. I'm hoping
that 8 to 9 will be a smaller change and similar to something like 5.2
to 6.0.

Any thoughts from anyone who may have seen a preview of 9 or who knows
what 9 will entail?

Don't think many, if any, have seen 9. From what I've heard, which
isn't much, is that it's going to be similar to 8. It's going to be on
the .Net /OE framework. I would go to 8.03.40x as soon as you can.
That was the time line they gave for 9 but I'll believe it when I see
it. Plus you probably won't want to be on the first on 9 for the bug
reasons. I'd say first or second quarter '09 is more likely.

My take on 9, from what I could glean from various conversations, is that at the moment it is another "unified manufacturing system" attempt. A version to bring all the different manufacturing systems together on one (Vantage based) platform. Some features in the other manufacturing products may be fit into the "Vantage" core but more likely the reverse will be more true for users of other the systems. I also heard it refered to as "Epicor 9" and "Epicor Manufacturing 9.0" but that may just be the marketing people in control again (ala Mfgsys). My gut feeling is they have an idea about a direction for "9" but nothing concrete yet.

isn't much, is that it's going to be similar to 8.

Epicor 9 is supposed be released in 9-12 months. Orlando had its ups
and downs. Downs: boring in between the end of classes and evening
functions, food wasn't as good, meeting space layout wasn't as good and
hotel wasn't as nice. Ups: since there wasn't much else to do most
people congregated around one area for extra networking, more room for
hall of solutions and better for families.

I was not at Perspectives this year (2007) but I was at 2006 in
Vegas. A year ago they had announced 9.0 as a unified product and
they threw out some dates like 12 - 18 months (believe it when we
all see it). At that time some Epcior folks told us they were taking
best functionality in other products such as iScala and Enterprise
and incorporating it into Vantage ( ala 9.0 ). Also that the main
theme of upgrades would be on the financial side and the procurement
side of the product. I agree with others, to go and upgrade to
8.03.4xx as soon as you can.

I had heard the product will be called "Epicor 9" as well. Also, a serious

Yes, I had heard Epicor 9 as well. I would "like" to see:

- HTML versions of the screens so no thick client is required

- .Net 3 Workflow instead of the workflow that CRM and the other workflow that
purchasing uses.

- Ability to use .Net languages in the Product Configurator

- and A Serious Rewrite of CRM. ;-)
