Subject: RE: [Vantage] Perspectives Session Registration

I started this and it grew off-topic into general "newbie" tips - sorry,
it's long:

The is no registration for "regular" sessions. Labs, or anything with
PCs for people to actually use do require registration and you can do
that online. Usually there are "space available" last minute
registrations for labs at the actual conference check-in but if it is
that late be sure to be there at noon on Sunday. Almost all of the labs
have a "gallery" of chairs (no PC access) in the back on a first come
first seated basis to at least observe the session.

For regular sessions just "plan" them out from the agenda. Fortunately
they try to keep Vantage sessions in the same rooms from hour to hour so
very often you are not moving around much in-between. Unfortunately the
assignment of rooms is not in the Perspectives PDF package nor on the
web site so you can't select regular sessions by which are closer. The
Caesars convention center is pretty spread out on two floors but most
sessions are on floor 3 (lunch and general sessions on 2 - major
sessions and keynote in a large tent type building out back behind the
pools). Here is a link to a map of the meeting rooms:
http://space.pcma.org/Misc/Caesars/floorplans3.htm (change 3 to 2 for
second floor)

I usually spend a bit of Sunday afternoon, after I check-in and have the
room assignments for sessions, highlighting sessions I plan to attend -
starting with labs I have already registered for so I don't double up.
I still usually end up with an alternate for each session. Also, Monday
used to be a breeze for scheduling because most of the day (if not all)
there is only one session to select from - morning is Epicor big-wig
speeches (rah-rah-rah) and afternoon is Vantage related (status of
product, futures, etc...). Looks like they listened to suggestions and
cut back on the [All] sessions and put in more topic related sessions on
Monday after the morning break. So Sunday looks like the time to plan.
I often do a preliminary session topic highlighting on the flight down
to LV.

For a newbie also plan to schedule in the Tuesday night "fast & Furious"
party. The food is great, drinks are free (up to a certain time) and
the band (same one for many years) is very talented, versatile and fun
(especially when they haul people up on stage to "play" plastic blow-up
guitars and act foolish). Go early and get a table closer to stage if
you want to get picked. There is also a welcome reception Sunday
evening (usually with hosted bar) that is a great chance to mingle and
talk to people. Badge lanyards are color coded (traditionally Vantage
is orange) so you can spot "like minds" faster. This is a great chance
to meet other users so when you see them later in sessions or at lunch
(at color coded tables) you already know them a bit.

Other tips:
If you don't bring a wireless notebook there are still PCs available to
use for email back to the office or looking up restaurant info. Last
year they goofed big time and placed them inside the "Hall of Solutions"
area so you could only access them during Hall hours - bummer for
checking email at breakfast time when office back east is 2-3 hours
ahead. With a notebook sometimes paying the 5 day in-room internet
package price ($40?) is worth it if you really need to stay connected.
I often take breakfast back to room and log-in over coffee before the
first session. Easier to do if you are in Palace Tower because the
"commute" is an elevator ride. Other Caesars rooms are a walk through
the casino and shops to the convention center. Come prepared for any
temperature in sessions...the A/C can get pretty cool but full rooms can
get hot. The general sessions, if in "the tent", can start out very
cold so take a jacket or sweater.

When possible when traversing casinos and public areas don't wear your
badge and get "marked" as a convention person. Caesars Palace room
doors are notorious for not latching tightly when you leave room -
always pull shut and double check. They used to have guards at
elevators checking room keys but not last coulple years so there have
been room thefts from people finding non-latched doors. Even if not
staying at Caesars get a "Map of the Empire" at the front desk or
concierge desk. There are shortcuts worth learning for getting from
street to conference. The new lobby and Augustus Tower make this even
more difficult. If you don't have a Caesars slot club card sign up
before you check-in and give the number to them. If you come back to
Las Vegas within 13 months (next Perspectives?) you get a 3% rebate on
your room and all room charges (even from other Caesars Entertainment
hotels & restaurants) added to a comp account 30 days later. So on the
next visit you can use it at restaurants, bars, etc... No gambling
required.

Any other newbie tips from veterans?

-Todd C.

As a Perspectives newbie, do I/should I pre-register for the daily
sessions I want to attend? And if I do, I assume it's no problem to
change at the last minute. I understand that I should, at a minimum for
any LABS, but do I need to pre-plan the entire seminar?
