Phone line and modem

Usually when you download software and pay by your credit card they will ask
you for your e-mail address and send you a confirmation number. If he gives
them this number they should allow him to download it again.

Thanks everyone! I showed him how to do it so he can change it on his modem
when he gets home. I really feel for him because he paid for a tax download
and got kicked off! So, he doesn't know if he goes back online to download
it again if he has to enter his credit card info again and maybe get charged
a second time!!

If you're online and you get an incoming call and it kicks you off of the Internet, is it a problem with the modem or the phone company? Someone asked me this because it is happening to him at home and it's a real pain in the butt! I didn't know the answer. Does anyone else have ideas?

They have call waiting and need to disable it before the computer connects.
Normally this is a *70, (, represents pause) This disables it for the one
call and it will return to normal after the call is ended. There is a
setting in the dialup networking settings for this. Have them check it out.

Most likely it call-waiting. You can disable call-waiting with the *70
prefix in the phone number.

Prefix the number your dialing with *70, this will turn off "Call Waiting"
on the line for this call only.

Does he have call annoying, err... call waiting? The indicator tone for
that will bump off many modems. Check with the local telco (or info
section in the phone book) to see if it can be temporarily turned off. *67
does it in many places. There's a setting somewhere in windoze modems or
dial up networking that you can enter it to be included in the dial string.
