Carol,
That is also what we do, use a purchased two-part tag. We're on 9.04.507A, but I don't think the process will be vastly different for 9.05.702 (which I'm testing now but haven't gotten to that part yet).
I made a new Report Style for PrintTag (this is what the Cycle Count Maintenance program uses for "Print Tags" after "Generate Tags" has run off the Actions menu). I print them only to the screen, and then I take the XML file that's created and open it in the Crystal Developer. From there I have a few more printing options, since these tags are actually printed on a (shock) dot-matrix non-networked printer (Epson LQ-950).
For a full physical inventory (which we have to take twice a year), it takes about 3 hours to print the 3000-odd tags. My controller and I make a night of it... there are some other half-year-end things we have to do that take some time, so we get those going, let the company buy us dinner, and then come back and get these done (on Saturday night). On Sunday the controller comes back in and separates the tags, and on Monday the fun really begins.
The tags we use are 2-part 5"x7", I can give you our supplier if you like. We've used them for 4 inventories so far, and everyone hates them LESS than they hated what we used before. I suppose that's progress.

I thought we could possibly use the notes field to input our tag number (this would be for cross reference purposes on the reports that the auditors would use).
