PID consuming CPU but cant be found

Now I would add each one back, one at a time until you find the one that sets off the PIDs.

Ive killed all three now and the system seems fine.

Do you know how to use NET STOP to stop the AdminService for OpenEdge?

Its definitely a strange one. Come in on a Saturday and restart your server.
Then monitor the PIDs. This way you can eliminate that it’s a user. If the PIDs
still show up then disable all of your schedules and restart your appservers. If
your schedules are not running and the PIDs are still showing up while there are
no users in the system then I am stumped. I would at that point check your
appserver and database settings. Did you kill the PID and see what happens?

We are on 9.04.505c.

They are all running and completing correctly (according to History Tasks).

Its strange - Epicor are baffled too.

Did I have to stop the T & P apps before disabling?

Go into the System Agent Maintenance--Schedules tab and uncheck the "enable"
check box. Now restart your Process & Task agents in your Progress Explorer
tool. You will find that the schedule you unchecked in the System Agent
Maintenance is no longer running in your System Monitor.

Or do you mean the item attached to them is configured wrong?

Do you have any custom schedules attached to the system agent? If these
are
configured incorrectly, they can cause a situation almost exactly like
you
are describing.

Hi

I have a PID that is consuming 13% CPU but I have checked all of the app servers
and I can't see it.

What else could it be?

It says _proapsv.exe.

Thanks.

[Non-text portions of this message have been removed]
It could be one of the processes being managed by the TaskAgent (like
MRP) or ProcessServer (like MultiCompany).

ProcessExplorer
(http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896653) would help
you identify it if you really wanted to dig into it.

That could be a bad crystal report using odbc. The user gets tired of waiting and closes the report screen and logs off. The process hangs until the server is restarted or it may clear days later.
It seems that 13% is what is used for each one that we have seen. I have had the users do the same report over and over and each time it takes 13%.Â
We never found out why - just the Crystal Report was launched with the wrong parameters and never finishes running.

I left the PID running last night and came in this morning to find two of them
running. Both exactly the same CPU use (12-13% - when one flicks to 12% the
other does at the same time).

Im wondering if this is linked to our weekly slow downs.

If we have 4 of these by Friday, that's 52% CPU usage drop.

We restarted our server on Sunday (Epicor's recommendation) because we were
having a complete slow down every 7-10 working days. When we get a slow down,
stopping the apps and db doesnt work. We have to restart the server.

If we restart the server on a Sunday and get one of these PIDs stuck at 12-13%
every working day (which is what appears to be happening), by the time we get to
the 7th/8th day, our CPU on the server is maxed out which is why we get a slow
down and a crash.

Then we restart the server and everything is ok for another 7-10 days.

I dont know if there is any logic in what I am saying, but the numbers certainly
seem to add up.

Question is, dare I kill these PIDs or am I going to mess up the whole system?!

Hi

By ODBC do you mean connected directly to the DB?

All our reports are Epicor reports or custom BAQ reports. We dont actually
connect via ODBC (unless the way that Epicor does reports is classed as ODBC).

It is logical what you say but I dont think it applies to us.

Is there any way of finding out if any reports are ODBC?

You won't mess up the system… just possibly crash it. I've done that already. We had a similar problem as what you are describing. I killed what I thought was a rogue PID and it stopped our database and kicked everyone out of the system.

You may have said this already but what version of Vantage are you running?

You could try stopping and restarting the taskagent and processerver appservers
and see if it gets killed.

We have no active or scheduled tasks running according to system monitor.

Nobody is doing anything that they dont normally do.

It could be one of the processes being managed by the TaskAgent (like
MRP) or ProcessServer (like MultiCompany).

ProcessExplorer
(http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896653) would help
you identify it if you really wanted to dig into it.

Hi

I have a PID that is consuming 13% CPU but I have checked all of the app
servers
and I can't see it.

What else could it be?

It says _proapsv.exe.

Thanks.

That could be a bad crystal report using odbc. The user gets tired of waiting
and closes the report screen and logs off. The process hangs until the server is
restarted or it may clear days later.
It seems that 13% is what is used for each one that we have seen. I have had the
users do the same report over and over and each time it takes 13%.

We never found out why - just the Crystal Report was launched with the wrong
parameters and never finishes running.

Do you have any custom schedules attached to the system agent? If these are
configured incorrectly, they can cause a situation almost exactly like you
are describing.

I am the only one who creates custom reports, but I never connect odbc I always
just connect to xml data from Epicor.

I might cancel them tonight and see what happens.

No, just stop the schedules you created from running. Unless they are something your company can't live without.

Disable it in system agent?

Either way, disable the schedule and see if that eliminates your
problem.

We do have schedules, but I cant see how you can configure them wrong.

Or do you mean the item attached to them is configured wrong?

Do you have any custom schedules attached to the system agent? If these
are
configured incorrectly, they can cause a situation almost exactly like
you
are describing.

I forget the exact issue as it's been a LONG time since we ran into it. But
as best I can recall, there was an option in the schedule that was labeled
pretty unintuitively and activating it would cause the tasks to latch onto a
new appserver everytime they ran without releasing the previous one.

I know that's vague as as hell, but it's been a while since we dealt with
that. I can't find any emails or anything with the exact details.

If you want a faster way to test if this is the issue, increase the
frequency of your schedule. If you push it way up and your system bogs down
faster... tada!
