PO categories with part class

Hello all,
We are transitioning to kinetic from Classic and trying to set up our parts in the correct way this time. In Classic, we had generic non stock part numbers that we would use to categorize our spend and for GL coding. For example, we may have 100 part numbers that are all for shop supplies, but on the PO partnum, we would use a generic “SHOPSUPPLIES_PN” and then add the actual part numbers in the line description. The problem we now have is we can’t really see purchasing history of the actual part numbers.

My question is, what is the proper way to have good visibility on spend by part number and also have categories for PO spend? Is the part class the method to do this properly? If the part numbers have part classes for our categories we are interested in, then we would enter the actual part number into the PO, and then we could see actual spend by part number and then create reports for category spend by using part class.

Just looking for any feedback if this is how others have done it or am I thinking of part classes in the wrong way.

I believe you want to use Part Class to define the category (Like Shop Supplies), In Part Entry, you enter a unique part number for each part you order. Then you can reference those parts in your PO lines.

Yep, that’s the idea. I’m just not sure if this is how others are achieving this goal or perhaps a better way.
