Post Sale Serial / Problem Tracking

While Vantage does a fine job of tracking serial #s during the manufacturing process and at the point of shipment, it falls short in providing the ability to track field issues and upgrades after the point of sale.

In our situation, we manufacture standard and semi-custom production machines. I would like to track by serial # the basics (serial #, mfg date, warranty expiration, etc...) which Vantage handles well. I would also like to track in field firmware/software upgrades, part upgrades, and problem tracking. Rather than create a custom database to do this, can anyone recommend an off the shelf solution or share how they are tracking this information??
