Todd,
What I would suggest is to burn a CD with the following information:
-A ZIPPED Backup of your database
-A copy of the Progress Patch for that version of the database.
-A copy of the Vantage Patch for that version of the database.
-A copy of your RB & Custom Crystal Reports.
- A copy of your Custom Vantage Reports.
You will also need the Install CD of your Vantage 3, 4, 5.0, 5.1 version (whichever needs to be restored). No matter which way you keep your backups, you are going to need to reinstall that version (or the next version if want to convert the backup to a current version) to read the database. If you keep all the above in a secure location, you should have what you need to get prior period information.
I prefer backing up to CD, because many times Backup tapes will be obsolete and/or the drive that created them is no longer available. Using a CD insures the data can be read on most any PC. Our 1.4GB database zips down to about 384MB, so it still fits on a CD fortunately.
Also, downloading the patches now and storing them would insure that in the event they are no longer available on Epicor's site you would have access to them in an emergency.

Subject: [Vantage] Pre-Upgrade Backups
In preparing for our upgrade from 4.0 to 5.20 this weekend the thought
occured to me that all our backups (last 2 weeks of dailys and 2 years of
monthlys) will become obsolete. The backup.1 files will not "fit" the new
schemas so restoring them into our test database (the one we play with) will
not work. Once in a great while I need to restore an old DB and run a
report or an extract from it. Rare but possible. Especially after year end
with auditors around.
Has anyone else has thought this through to a solution. How do you deal
with old backups after an upgrade?
- Save all the intermediate versions (epic, epic51) folders to use with
current one to load the DB and run schema changes?
- Load 4.0 on a standalone machine? (Save those old RB reports too I
guess.)
- Pray you don't need them and start recycling the monthly tapes? (At $70ea
that's $1,680 with which to buy forgiveness for not being able to restore
the old stuff ;) )
Just trying to lookout before we leap in case there is something I should do
in advance.
Thanks,
