Do you have the report open in development mode (especially Crystal)?  Close development and try again.  Another cause is a misspelling in the Report Style info – especially the path to the report.

Cannot Print Direct: "System error has occurred! Run in preview mode from system monitor for details"

I'm having this issue too. Some of our printers work, some of them don't. All that fail throws the above error in the System Monitor.

In our environment, this issue occurs on Crystal Reports of the following variety: 1.) custom reports built by us; 2.) "stock" reports modified by us; 3.) "stock" reports that we have never touched.

The issue for us seemed to start immediately after I migrated our Print Management server to a different server on our domain. As part of this, I also updated drivers—some due to some other issues we were having with a couple printers outside of Epicor, others due to the newer server OS of the new Print Management server. I also updated many default printing preferences as they weren't set correctly the first time.

I have a support ticket in with Epicor for this but they haven't been any help really:

The printing preferences on the driver on the new print server for these printers are most likely different than what they were on the old print server.  For print direct, Crystal needs to have the default settings on the driver such as the default orientation, margins, etc match what is set in the actual Crystal RPT and the settings on the printer record(s) within Epicor.  If you change the printer preferences to match what they were on the old server on the new server, it will likely work as it did as the only cause that support is aware of that prevents print direct is a mismatch of settings between the printer record > printer preferences on the driver > Crystal RPT.
Our problem seems to reside either in the Epicor Database or Crystal Reports; the problem is identical on our Dev server (clean install) as well as a new server I staged up from scratch to test this. The only common variables between the 3 affected servers is the database and the .rpt files.

I've opened individual Crystal Report files to disassociate the printer and dump page default settings and this has some effect—I got one printer to start working while 3 others still fail in my test.

I did find a workaround for this—we can bypass print direct by doing a print preview and then printing from the Crystal Reports viewer; but this only works ~90% of the time. When it fails, the user gets a System Alert window with the error "The handle is invalid". To convolute things even more, rebooting the user's system sometimes gets around this "handle is invalid" error but the error will come back over time.

This occurs on printers that have been added to Epicor (System Management > Company Maintenance > Printer) and printers that have no record in Epicor.

Has anyone had any experience with this error? I would love to find a solution! FWIW we are running Epicor 9.05.702a 64-bit/Progress OpenEdge 10.2A 64-bit on Server 2008 R2 64-bit. Our Print Management server was formerly Server 2003 R2 32-bit, and is now Server 2008 R2 64-bit. End-user OS's are Windows 7 Pro, both 32- and 64-bit.

The workaround is to print through print preview mode but even then, we are still seeing the error.&nbsp; We’ve been told by Epicor to check the report path folder location if it is a permissions issue.&nbsp; Also, we were told to check the print drivers.&nbsp; Have you checked your folder path permissions?&nbsp; I would think it isn’t a permissions issue since it works through print preview mode.&nbsp; We still have not resolved this issue and reviewing our environment setup since we are not able to duplicate it in one of our test environments.&nbsp; When it fails, the user gets a System Alert window with the error &quot;The handle is invalid&quot;. I've checked permissions on the reports folders, everything is as it should be. Thanks for the suggestion though, that would make sense—except that the print preview option also would not have worked, as you mentioned. Permissions on that folder have not changed since the original install either, I checked anyway.

I have no idea what Dora is talking about. Neither of her responses seem to be relevant to what you and I are dealing with.

Please make sure your Epicor Admin box is accessible.  I ran into an issue where Custom printing stopped because this box was offline.  When brought up, ODBC was able to connect and everything worked.

We have an Epicor Server (Where databases are located), a SSRS Server (SQL) and an EpicorAdmin Server (Where Custom Reports ODBC connector, Client Install point, Epicor Management tools, & Progress Management Tools reside.

If this server is down, no custom reports work (Only standard/canned reports work).  I thought that this "may" be the case here.

Sorry.  Very basic, but I always start here w/any print issues (No certain order - wrote response quickly):

1.  Has anything changed on the network?  If so, back out the change and test again.
2.  Does printing work outside of Epicor?  If it does, it must be an issue w/Epicor.  Contact Epicor Support.
3.  Is the driver the latest one?  If not, update the driver.
4.  Were there any Windows Updates installed recently? If so, back them out and test again.
5.  Were admin passwords changed (ODBC, Progress, etc.)?  If so, make sure you have updated all requisite areas where old passwords resided.
6.  The group "Everyone" should have full access to the Reports folder on the Epicor Server.
7.  Make sure your Epicor Server (Or wherever the reports reside) are pingable from a PC/Client that is affected.

Thanks for the suggestion though, that would make sense—except that the print preview option also would not have worked, as you mentioned. Hey thanks for the responses gang.

Chia—this happens on both our live/production environment, as well as our development environment, as well as a third test environment I staged up to test this specific issue. The only common factors between the three environments are the reports and database are the same; copied from the live environment.

Now that I think of it, I will stage up another test environment that is stock everything and see if the issue persists there. I'll report back with what I find.

Dan—here's my responses:

1.  Has anything changed on the network?  If so, back out the change and test again.
This happened immediately after moving our Print Management server to a new OS. As part of this move I updated drivers (required, we went from Server 2003 32-bit to Server 2008 64-bit) and fixed some default printer settings that were set up wrong. Rolling back isn't impossible, but I'd have to stage up a test domain to mimic the old environment as I don't want to bring back the issues I fixed to our users.

This would be pretty time consuming and I'm not sure it would tell me anything except "yep, it works like I thought it would" and "now all the other printer issues I fixed are back, now what".

2.  Does printing work outside of Epicor?  If it does, it must be an issue w/Epicor.  Contact Epicor Support.
Printing works 100% as intended outside of Epicor. In fact, I can open a report known to have this issue in Crystal Reports, and successfully print that report to a printer known to have this issue.

I've had a ticket open with Epicor support since January regarding this; they aren't stumped, timeliness of responses has been the reason for such a large timeframe.

3.  Is the driver the latest one?  If not, update the driver.
Yes—all drivers are up to date; and when I updated the drivers, it had no impact on the issue.

4.  Were there any Windows Updates installed recently? If so, back them out and test again.
I've frozen Windows Updates on all 3 servers to rule out this question

5.  Were admin passwords changed (ODBC, Progress, etc.)?  If so, make sure you have updated all requisite areas where old passwords resided.
No passwords have been changed.

6.  The group "Everyone" should have full access to the Reports folder on the Epicor Server.
I've verified the folder permissions are correct.

7.  Make sure your Epicor Server (Or wherever the reports reside) are pingable from a PC/Client that is affected.
This is the case.

For some reason the text editor's color highlighting decided to stop working halfway through; hopefully my responses are easy enough to follow. Thanks again for the input both of you! If you have any other ideas, I'd love to hear them!

I "think" I know what the issue is...  You went from 32-bit to 64-bit.  Did you change your ODBC from 32-bit to 64-bit?

They are in different directories:
c:\windows\sysWOW <--- 64-bit
c:\windows\system32 <-- 32-bit

NOTE:  This is for a Progress Database (Epicor v9.05.702A) - What I am on.  Not sure about v10.
