Process server - auto start BusinessActivityManager?

Hi Dale,

The process server is like most of the rest of Progress processes, you
need to stop and start it to get it to take changes in code and
configuration. It's likely you have now cycled it and the global alerts
have now taken your changes.

Dunno if you knew, there are a couple of .txt files in your /MFGWRK61
folder, namely GenericImport.log, GlobalAlerts.log, epicor-stmp.log.txt,
and BAQuery.log.

The business activity query is such a drain on the system I don't think
epicor should ever enable an auto start, and you might want to set a
delay on it as well (we put ours to a 2 hour delay). If you don't set a
delay it will auto-cycle and chew up your cpu and disk. This was such a
drain we opted to go to odbc extracts (pull instead of push) via SQL
server on another server. This split the load between the servers and
opened up an (to my taste) easier development environment.

Take care,

Steve

Folks:

First let me apologize for being brain dead...

You guys are correct. It is Business Activity QUERY, not Manger in the
process server. In my defense when I contacted tech support on this we
experimented by adding StartBusinessActivityManager=yes in the
ProcessServer.MFG file. Evidently both the tech and myself were thinking
since the alert was set up in Business Activity Manager in Vantage that
is what we needed in the .MFG file. Anyway, it would not automatically
start the process.

This situation is still very weird. Our emails would absolutely not be
sent unless I manually started the BAQ in the process server. We tested
this extensively back when we went live. However, after reading your
comments I have tested it and it is working today with only the Global
Alerts started! On Monday of this week I had the opportunity to update
Progress and Vantage to the latest patches. Maybe this had some effect
on the situation? Or maybe the moon has reached the proper alignment
with the rest of the planets? Who knows. Very frustrating and
embarrassing to say the least.

Thanks again for the responses.

Dale,
What version is this. The process that I was attempting to automate
was the
Business Activity QUERY startup to automate data exports. I mistook
the
explanation for that. Like others, I don't have an option for
MANAGER.

Butch,
We have created several custom BAMs. For instance, when a PO is above
your approval level, the BAM sends an email to your approval person
telling them essentially that "{user} created PO#xxx on {date} and
that
PO #xxxx needs to be reviewed for approval or rejection". The emails
will not be sent unless the Business Activity MANAGER process in the
Process Server is started. Global alerts evidently do not catch these.

I only run the Global Alerts on my process server, but both my Global
Alerts and BAM's are being sent without any problems. What does
starting the Business Activity Query do?

Dale,
So far I have only bad news. Epicor has claimed that this is not an
option
and they don't intend it to become an option in the 6.X software. If
anyone
hears or knows of a method, please let us know.
(PS, I attempted the same method you have with the same results
looking
for
an "undocumented feature")

Group:

Does anyone know a way to have the Process Server automatically start
the Business Activity Monitor portion when it is launched? I have
edited the .MFG file and can change the other items to start. For
example:

StartGlobalAlerts=yes

makes the global alerts start up when Process Server is launched, but
if you add:

StartBusinessActivityMonitor=yes

nothing happens. Am I missing something? Has anyone else ran into
this problem. Everytime I have to reboot the server I must remember
to start the process server and then the BAM manually. Time and age
has taken a toll on my memory so this does not always happen. I would
like to put Process Server.mfg in the startup group to have it start
anytime the server boots.

Any help is appreciated!

Thanks,
