Product Configurator

We will be interested in a solution for this, too!

Epicor said this functionality is not available. We asked for this last year when we were still testing 5.1. Still not available in 5.2. We worked around it by creating a constructed string as an input and copying and pasting during sales order entry. Very annoying but workable.

To all,
We are looking to finally implement the product configurator, but
have one challenge. We would like to have the part description act
like a legend for the smart string. Basically, if the part number
that is generated is GR6A1x-xx-x, we want in the description as
printed on the sales order / quote to say:

GR=Goldrush
6=6oz
A=120/1/60 volts
X=Salt
X=Standard Control
X=Stainless Steel Cabinet
X=No extra doors
X=No custom features

We saw the Epicor sales rep do this on the first version that the
configurator was available (4.0?) but we can't replicate. We are on
Vantage 5.1

Thanks in advance for your help!

Andrew

I am using the Product Configurator on Vantage 6.1. I am building an
order screen and setting up all my rules. I have not figured out how
to on a radio button say having 3 choices, to gray out one of the
choices if something is not met in the rules.
Then on a separate question how to make certain fields required on
that same form. I have a few drop down boxes that I would like to
make them required before they move to the next field.

Thanks
Dan
I am not sure how to handle your first question. As for the second, I make
use of the "prompt when" tabs. I set all pull downs with a default value
of "<---" as an arrow pointing to the previous field. Then I sent the
prompt when "previous pulldown" not equal to "<---". This way the next
pulldown will not activate until the previous is changed from the "<---".

Hope this helps.

Dan,
Choices for radio buttons are either all available or not available. They cannot be turned off selectively. Use combo boxes or split radio or mulitple toggle boxes.

I don't think you can exclude one choice on a radio set based on a condition
from other fields. You can make 2 or 3 check boxes that look like a radio
set, and use their 'prompt when' fields to 'grey' them out if a certain
condition is or isn't met. The feature of radio sets is only one choice is
allowed, and with individual check boxes, you won't get that feature. You
could use the 'prompt when's in each check box to look at the other boxes
and say 'prompt when' the other boxes aren't checked. If you're not
familiar with writing that logic, let me know and I'll work it out for you.
Does anyone know if there is documentation for setting it up,
besides what's available in the Help menu?
Does anyone have some real good instructions on how to setup the
product configurator?

I would like to set this up, but I am under the impression that the
routing has to have every workcenter in every department in case we
need to use them. This means that the BOM will be about 100
operations in length.

I'm not too clear on how to go from here.

Thanks!
Ben
You would need to enter every workcenter that could possibly be used
in that configured product. You have to enter into the engineering
workbench every possibility for that configured product, including
all the parts it could possibly use and then write the rules for when
they would be used. It is a lot of work in initial setup but saves a
lot of time down the road after it is set up.

I've been doing configurator implementations for years
(with various configurators) and they basically all
work in generally the same way when it coes to the BOM
integration.

At some point you have to set up all the parts,
operations, resources etc. and then write the rules.

It is a lot of work, bt you can make it easier by
breaking it down into smaller sub-projects.

We have been working on configuring a part in 6.10.524. We had

Hi Joy

Also make sure that you hit the Quote same as order button in the
Pricing configurator. It can sometimes catch you out if you don't

We are in the process of implementing Vantage 803 and will be going
live April 2, 2007. We will be using the product configurator
internally (and over the web Phase 2). Was wondering if there are
any others using the Vantage 803 product configurator and how
complex their application is? I could send screen shots of ours and
we could compare notes. We are near completion of our first
configuration in our test database and would like to compare notes
or get advise from anyone who is going through the same thing.

I look forward to hearing from anyone that would like to discuss
this topic.

Thanks!
John, We selected Vantage for the product configurator however they don't offer a cascading configurator so its very limited in scope. We went live with 8.00 (now on .809g) at two companies several months ago but we are waiting for any real improvement notes from 8.03 users to see if their prompts,keep when rules etc. have improved or provide any more sophistication. We make custom pressure independent valves for oil and gas industry and our sub-sea valves get very complicated with thousands of parts-its quite challenging to get a configurator going for these as of yet but we got several going for our surface line which are much simpler options to configure. We will be looking to implement it over the web shortly at one company but having seen K2 (ski's) web based product configurator performance, I'm not terribly impressed. I'll be curious to see how you progress.
Thanks

What do you mean by cascading configurator? You can do several
different things using the prompt when statements and the dynamic
lists.

I am in the middle of implementing 8.03. We are using the
configurator for medical refrigerators.

I would like to see a screen print of your configurator. I have
utilized the configurator to not only keep when and set field but to
calculate based off of input criteria. I have also used the
configurator to define custom parts - not to create a new part name
(because it shows up in your part master I don't want a bunch of custom
parts in there) but I add to the description of the few generic custom
parts I do allow in the part master and basically define the part in
the description based off of input criteria. I too am disappointed in
the configurator because I have seen better but was able to make it
work. It took a long time to figure it out.
John, Not sure how the screen print will be of any help to you. We set up numerous configurators for each of our valve products - we are a custom make to order valve configuration/ engineer-to-order /assemble-to-order setup. For each of our numerous valve lines, it looks ever so different. We wanted to make it more sophisticated since our next step is to phase it to the web for our VARs/independent resellers to utilize it. Anyway, I've attached an average one for you-plain and simple
thanks

Hi John, we are currently developing a simple Configurator app., we're are still in Vantage 6.10..
The challenge is lack of info on the subject, but we're getting thru it and I'd be happy to share and learn as we go.

We're new to the Configurator, currently developing a simple instance
where we are looking to establish a Quote Price, from only one 'Input'
( value chosen from an Excel LookUp Table), which, from the
instructions, will be the 'General Expression' value.

We have no 'adders' at this point.
In 'Pricing Maintenance' how do we dictate the 'general Expression'
value?
We are setting up the Configurator and are relatively new to the
process.
For this 'subassy ' I've added all possible Materials and Operations
and then use 'Rules' to select what is needed , based on 'Inputs', etc.

The problem is a few Materials change quantities from 'instance'
to 'instance'. I've found that I cannot use an 'Expression' when using
a 'SetField' Rule ( such as : If <condition> Then Do:
QuoteMtl.QtyPer = 2.
End. )
where <condition> is based on an Input.

I could add an Input that holds the Qnty , based on conditions,
this could pollute the GUI with un-necessary 'stuff'.I tried defining
a Variable to hold the Qnty value, but it seems like only an 'Input'
can be used in the 'SetFields'.

The workaround is to add the same material multiple times in the
Base Part B.O.M., the use Rules to drop/keep.

Any suggestions from the 'masses' would be much appreciated.

Thanks,
Bill J.
