Programming Resources

As most have told you, we have pretty much taught ourselves or have looked to outside resources for help in customization. I happened to take a class in college on .NET programming (really basic) and just so happened to keep the book (acutally I think the bookstore wouldn't buy it back). I did find a local company that does training in all sorts of applications and took a course on Crystal Reports and they supplied excellent material to keep which has helped along the way. We are running Progress, which I have no training on, but have found a manual on 4GL programming (could e-mail it if you are on Progress). Other than that I have just used training accounts, google searches and the materials I have to make customizations.

Thank you

Sebastien.-
If your company is willing to pay for education, TAKE IT!

Otherwise get the EPICOR TOOLS USER GUIDE it has a lot of info to help
you start with customizations. Plus, you have us to guide you as well
and its free!

You can get the user guide from your CAM (yes it costs money but cheaper
than going to a class).

It is only steep if it takes you a long time...lots of hours outside of
work. If you have a test db, highly recommend you use it to hammer and
test your customizations.

Thanks,

I guess that means everybody is in the same boat when it comes to getting use to the customization tools.

Sebastien,

You are correct!!! we are in the same boat.. We started Implementation last June and it has been such a journey.

First, no matter how many prototypes or pilot testing you had, you will encounter many problems with the system itself and rwquest from your own company.

Second,

I agree you should get educated in BPMs ,BAQs(hopefully you have some programming knowledge) and Crystal Reports. A good way to strat is to ask your CAM for a copy of the Epicor Tools User Guide which explains you step by step how to customize the software.

Third,

Everything I know I learned it from this group so I strongly suggest post your issues here before you actually contact tech support. People here are amazing helping you and giving you advices for quick fixes while tech support may take days to solve it.

Good Luck

To some degree...there are a lot of people that have .NET programming skills that seems to help a bit. But these folks tend to be very helpful to newbies with questions. There are examples on Progress's website to help with 4GL programming. There are a lot of people here that know Crystal as well. So you are covered.

And of course BAQs, BPMs, customizations, etc....a lot of knowledgeable people willing to help.

The learning curve will be steep, but before you know it, you'll be picking up things left and right and it will come naturally.

I started working with Vantage 8.03.408b in November, with absolutely no prior experience in Vantage, Progress, Crystal, etc. The only experience I had was in .NET programming. And only about 4 months later, I've gained a great deal of knowledge and experience, writing much more complex BPM's and the like.

The best advice I can give is to just get into the Pilot/Test DB and experiment. The Users Guide will help, but 95% of what I learned was through this group and experimenting myself in Test/Pilot. Learning for yourself is absolutely incomparable to reading through Guides/Books.

Of course, just my two cents :)

I also have a PDF file of a lengthy 4GL programming guide, starting with basics and moving forward. If you'd like a copy let me know.
