Progress Reports

For someone that has never built progress reports, how would you go about it
and what's the difficulty?

Thanks,

Lori

Start with Report Builder its simpler and more basic. Learn joins, etc...
Work your way up to Crystal with ODBC or even custom code if you have
Provision.

not meeting my needs and would like to learn to build custom reports.

Hi Lori,
I have some sample Progress routines that will export data to .csv files. With the .csv file you can use a variety of tools (ie. Crystal, Access, Excel) to do some more complicated things than you could with any single tool. I never took a class. Some progress folks on the list gave me tips. Then I downloaded some of the Progress programming handbooks from their site to learn the various commands. (I'm assuming you have some programming background and know the basic control structures, loops, boolean logic, etc first.) With some practice, you can do some really nice things with progress routines. Once written, these 'exports' with progress can be automated with a shortcut or Task Scheduler.

I'd be glad to send along to you what I've learned ... that's how I learned.

Lori,
I have done some Progress based reports. I had the manuals and did
some reading for the basics. I had some help from the group as far as
getting the global variables to use when programming. I have built some
parameter selection interfaces. I did take a progress class called "4GL
Essentials" and thought it was well worth the money. I had a good teacher,
he really knew his stuff. I really like working with the Progress language
and try to do all my report requests with Progress now. I don't do any
writing to the database with my custom code, but maybe some day.
WWW.PEG.COM is a great resource for progress programming info. If I can
help get you started, let me know.

Here's a link on the eGroups files list with a set of progress routines. The main routine calls each of the three other routines. I use all three exported .cvs files in one report (linked through access) using Crystal. These routines have a pop-up window that shows the progress of the export and allows you to stop it. When I automate the exports, I remove all the windows and pop-up messages and create a .txt file to show me how many records were exported, and on what date/time. This way I can quickly look to see if the exports were accomplished the night before. Since these were created, I learned how to do actual subroutines with passing parameters, which has helped me do some multi-level Assemblies in recursive loops. Each new project brings with it new things to learn. Let me know what questions you may have.

Hello,

Can the reports that are text based (our consultant calls them progress
reports) be changed?

If so, can someone please outline how to do this? Our consultant says
that they can be modified but he doesn't know how to.

They are "hard coded" in one of the Progress programming tools, rather
than a report generator, like Crystal or Progress Report Builder. To
"modify" one, you would need the source code from Epicor. AFAIK, they
haven't made it available for several years.

You need to reverse-engineer the report and recreate it to your liking.
Which report are you trying to change?

Hi Wayne,

That is what I was afraid of.

We were looking to add the on hand quantity to the sale order back log
report.

I think I will have to just create our own open sales order report....

Why don't you create a new Crystal Report and add qty on hand to it?
I think it would be much easier.
