Purchasing Flexibility Needed - Looking for Customizations Will

If you are able to collect enough folks to share the cost without
exploding the design parameters, we might be interested in being
part as well. We are a multi-mode manufacture, including engineered
to order. The biggest challenge we face is that about 20% of the
final parts list is done on the fly (a little pinch of this, a dash
of that). Our enginering / manufacturing group wants to be able to
quickly add parts to the job. The "20% parts" are from stock, so it
is a different twist to what you are looking for, but ultimately, we
are wanting a simple way to add parts to a job.

Please contact me off line if you get enough of a response to start
something.

We would like to have ability to add material to the job by just
issuing a purchase order, and engineers only needing to select the
job# (no worry on the sequence #, not requiring them to add or
find on the job already, let the system, just look for same part,
and if not there, add the part as the next available sequence#).

This could even be taken a step further, and if purchased for a
job, not even require the part to be in the part master, OR if
purchased for a job and not in the part master, as the part is
entered on the purchase order, enable the part information to
automatically save into the part master.

Again - ability to do this on one screen, without having to do a
search & add, or add, etc., like currently forced into with Vista
6.1 -- takes 13 steps according to the engineers, and therefore,
as custom machine builder, whereby material will NEVER all be on
the Job in a bill of material list before need to begin ordering,
nor at the end, when in debug/change phase, the flexibility to
just add to the job without requiring extra steps is critical, and
where still not proven to "save time" as we were told the system
would in this "issuing purchase orders" area.

Another issue with Purchase Orders is that if select a supplier,
and then looking for parts -- shouldn't it just look for parts in
the supplier's price list? This will begin to take a lot of
memory in 8, if it doesn't begin to do so. In the training 8
database I have up, it still is looking for all parts, not just
the parts for the supplier that you have already selected.

Has anyone out there made customizations to either of these areas
for either 6.1 or 8.0? Willing to share? Willing to share in
cost to force Epicor to make the changes?

Please advise -- Will put in various options of these as
development calls/enhancement requests -- but, Epicor & Vista does
not seem to be responding quick enough, since these issues were
raised at last year's perspectives, as well as calls put in last
year. Not quick enough response to customers, as our engineers
looking at competitive product that appears to possibly do both at
first glance, however, Vista was also demo'd to work that way, but
doesn't.

I've been bugging Epicor for over a year about this. They don't care about
ETO because they think it's too unique -- exact words from an Epicor
developer. Once they realize this real-world problem, maybe they'll
reconsider.

But Vantage 8 .Net does help. For example, you can copy the job number,
assembly number and date from previous lines. Default the date on the first
line to two weeks out, etc. Haven't figured out how to automatically create
the Job Material in .Net without using OpenEdge. Doing the same for
Subcontracting would require prompting for Operation.

We are another Engineer to Order/Jobbing Shop that quickly learnt to
hate the Purchasing and in our case Request for Quotation RFQ
modules in Vantage. We have been live with Vantage 6.1 for 8 very
long months now.

We would gain a huge benefit from being able to work in a job
centric mode with features like:
- being able to select several hundred parts from a job and add them
to a purchase order. Why should a task that takes a few minutes in
excel take the best part of a day in Vantage?
- add multiple purchase parts to a job from the PO line without
having to navigate through the same 13 steps mentioned previously to
add each and every line.

I know everyone is different but looking at the posts to this
newsgroup I don't think that we are that unique.

The answer for us appears to be either turn the clock back 15 years
and reinstate the purchasing department or move to Version 8 and
start customising. In the world that I live in hell will freeze over
before a purchasing department overhead and associated overhead is
added back into the cost structure and Version 8 won't happen
anytime soon for us.

In the mean time we move totally off Vantage for RFQs and where
appropriate issue 1 line purchase orders for parts "as per the
attached list" and manage the problems of partial deliveries as best
we can. Not ideal

We use whatever tools come to hand and suit the task. Parts &
Vendors is a magnificent little package that still holds the Bills
for our engineered products and generates RFQs and POs. I have set
up an Excel spreadsheet that imports material parts on a job via
ODBC. This is a rough and ready tool but it allows us to
consolidate, cut and dice the purchasing for a job and generate RFQs
and POs in a fraction of the time it would take to do in Vantage.
