REPORTS TO: The Director of Operations
SUPERVISES: 2 Buyers
DEFINITION: Responsible for all aspects of material planning, vendor management and purchasing of raw material and components to support lock assembly, steel fabrication, electronic assembly, custom fabrication and safe assembly.
ESSENTIAL AND RELATED FUNCTION STATEMENTS: Primary job responsibilities and duties include, but are not limited to, the following:
• Directly supervise buyers and assist in cross-training and employee development
• Source new suppliers and develop strong working relationships with primary suppliers to maintain quality, provide competitive pricing and reduce lead times
• Work closely with sales, technical services and construction to develop forecasts to plan for short lead time product requirements
• Establish supplier kanbans, consignment inventory and/or direct vendor managed inventory programs to reduce inventory and material handling costs
• Negotiate supply contracts and blanket orders for steel, hardware, electronics and other high cost or high use items
• Manage the supply chain for long lead time, sole sourced and import components such as investment castings, motors and door hardware
• Develop and review material requirements plans based on order driven schedules to minimize part shortages while reducing inventory
• Meet annual cost savings goals through negotiated pricing, direct to stock and other programs that add value, reduce waste and reduce product lead times
• Monitor vendor performance and status of corrective action requests (CARS)
• Responsible for reviewing and executing Engineering Change Notices (ECN)
• Responsible for maintaining accurate cost data and resolving vendor payment issues
• Key participant in supporting new product development from prototype design through product launch
• Identify and implement continuous process improvements that support team, department and corporate goals
• Occasional travel for off-site meetings with suppliers
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Sufficient education, supervisory experience and work experience to demonstrate the knowledge, skills and ability to perform the functions required by this job classification. Typically acquired through:
• Undergraduate degree with 5 years of purchasing and management experience in a steel manufacturing environment with annual revenue of $15 million plus. APICS Certification a plus.
Or
• 10 years of purchasing and management experience in a manufacturing environment
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Detail oriented with strong oral and written communication skills
Ability to comprehend engineering drawings for sourcing parts and components
Experience with investment castings and other hard tooled products
Experience in performing part and product cost analysis
Proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel
MRP/ERP System Experience
Ability to work independently
Ability to interface with team members, supervisors and employees at all levels
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Pass Physical and Drug Screening
Acceptable background and credit history report
Possession of a valid Driver’s License
Occasional travel
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Primary work assignment is in an office environment (80% of time). Occasional off-site work may be required at supplier or job site on an as-needed basis (20% of time).
