Quick way to re-direct clients to new db?

Hello Everyone,

I recently moved a 6.x customer from one server to another...here's the
registry tool you can use to make life easier:

RegReplace

http://bladesdev.com/regreplace.htm

Very easy and fast...can be loaded from the server and then ran
simultaneously...

What happens is because there are references to the old server in the
registry Vantage tries to use those first before realizing it doesn't
exist and then hits the right one....

One tip...while you're moving things around, power down the old server
so you can verify that you are indeed hitting the new server...

Thanks,

One warning....this method leaves references to the old server in places
that can cause problems if the old server is removed from the network
(or shutdown). If I recall correctly references in the HOSTS (or was it
SERVICES ?) file can cause confusion and at best cause Vantage to start
and run seriously slowly..or at worst not at all. Try is out on one or
two then turn the old server off and see if they can start Vantage
before you roll it out to a lot of them. There might also be some
registry references too. The uninstall/reinstall of the client handles
all this a lot better although it is a lot more work to do. Just a
potential "gotcha" to watch out for.

I will answer it myself!

Ok, right click vantage icon, click on edit and change paths to new
server / and put new mapped drives.

Is there a way to edit the progress install on all the clients / all
the mfgsys installs on the clients to point to a new server? Just a
shot in the dark before I start looking to find a way without having
to run the install via the network. Running 6.1 just trying to find
out if this can be done.

thanks,

James

Be careful, the progress install paths out several dlls in the registry.

Try searching thru the client registry for "\ \ {old server name} \ and
see what you get.

Even though your icon change appears to work your registry will be
searching the old server for files.
