RB Filter

An alternate means is to use the index function (which I commonly use in 4gl
development). The index function simply returns the position at which one
string occurs in another. It returns zero if the specified search string
doesn't exist in the source string.

For example:

Index( "01,02,03,04,23,24,56" , EmpBasic.EmpID) > 0

would return true if EmpID is found in the source string, which is the first
argument in this case

n RB filter ~s list. These employee numbers have nothing else in common, so
this is the only way I have been able to pull in only these employees so
far. I also created an exact duplicate of this filter but used my next set
of 12 values, but RB didn't like it. I have also tried using "not" for the
filter, but I have more "not" values that I would have to enter in than my
current filter setup.

Any ideas gang?

Another option I've used to overcome this limitation is "OR"
such as
EmpBasic.EmpID IN-LIST '01','03','07','08','16','18','20','21','22','25'
OR
EmpBasic.EmpID IN-LIST '26','27','28','29','30','31','32','33','34','34'
OR
EmpBasic.EmpID IN-LIST '35','36','37','38','39','40','41','42','43','44'

If that's all the filter you have then it's a bit easier. However, if you
have more filters you have to duplicate your filter for each "OR" step.
Like this:

EmpBasic.EmpID IN-LIST '01','03','07','08','16','18','20','21','22','25'
And
Empbasic.active =yes
OR
EmpBasic.EmpID IN-LIST '26','27','28','29','30','31','32','33','34','34'
And
Empbasic.active =yes
OR
EmpBasic.EmpID IN-LIST '35','36','37','38','39','40','41','42','43','44'
And
Empbasic.active =yes

If you have several layers of filters for each "OR" group then
Dick's solution is probably better.

You could create a logical function field and then test for "true" in the
filter. As long as there is not a requirement for the user running the
report to change the values. This might have a small impact on performance
though. For example:
In-List = IIF(EmpBasic.EmpID = '01' or
EmpBasic.EmpID = '03' or
EmpBasic.EmpID = '05' or
EmpBasic.EmpID = '08',
True, False)

Specifically to employees I added at check-box VB Form field on Shop
Employee to exclude specific employees from certain efficiency reports. The
production managers can maintain the elligibility themselves. Then I test
for the EmpBasic.CheckBox1 = 'True' in the filter. I also made a report for
them to list all employees with a given checkbox entry.

We migrated to SQL Server and was there for 6 months. We went back to
Progress in March of this year. We have one of the fastest networks and
servers possible and it was still allot slower then Progress. We eventually
got the speed to an acceptable level. Our problem was with data corruption.
It seemed like almost every time we applied a patch it would corrupt
something. We are still dealing with problems that was caused by the time
spent on SQL Server. When we made the change back in March, I was told that
there was no other SQL Server users left. I also was frustrated when
calling Tech support. When I mentioned that I was on SQL Server, I often
imagined the Tech support person with the "deer in the headlights" look
about them. One way I got by allot of the speed issues was to run as many
users as possible on Terminal Services from the Vantage server. Although
you should normally not run server applications such as SQL Server on a
Terminal server, this was one of the few things I could do that made a huge
difference.
A few other things that where problems.
1) Priority dispatch report that takes 30 sec on Progress takes 30-45
minutes on SQL Server
2) Global Finite Scheduling took over 24 hours to run.
3) Installation and upgrade instructions where obviously untested.

Hope you have better luck then we did. I have a Priority Dispatch report
written in MS Access 2000 that runs on SQL Server much faster then the
Vantage report if you would like a copy of it. I believe I still have a
copy of all of our custom reports written in Access if you would like them
let me know.

We bought version 9 and then discovered the reports did not work in 5.2, and
when support was asked they told us we had to get 8.5 because 9 was not
supported. We purchased a downgrade to version 8.5 to be supported with
5.2 and I believe the cost was around $50.

How about using a field in a VB Form to flag the employees to be
included? Then just filter like: EmpBasic.Character01 = 'A' or
whatever. It would be easier to maintain in the future, and the best part
- you can delegate it to your HR people or whomever; instead of having to
mess with it yourself every time employees come or go :)

If you use one of the filter options suggested, be sure to put ( parens )
around the ORs to keep your other conditions working.

Yes it can be done. I currently link our SPC charts/graphs/data to a button
on the Job Tracker - Operation level VB-Form so that you can view the most
recent SPC graphs/data for that specific operation.

Set the button on the VB-Form with the RUNPROG vdp/program.p

In the program.p, do a FIND vantage-table WHERE ROWID(vantage-table) =
GetCurrentRowID() no-lock.

This will set you program so that it has the current record from which the
VB-Form is from.

Then just do a DOS SILENT command to launch your external program.

Has anyone successfully linked a VB Form to a procedure which can identify a
specific filename... based on a current field referenced by the current
table in the VB Form? I'd love to discuss details with you if possible.

We would like to have a VB Form which does the following:

1. From the Inspection Receipt screen, with PartNum "ABC" selected,
2. Click the VB Forms button.
3. Click a XLS button on the VB Form, which activates a progress program,
which retrieves the "ABC.xls" file from the server and opens it in Excel.
4. There would also be a DWG button on the VB Form, which when activate,
would retrieve the "ABC.dwg" CAD file in either autocad or an autocad
viewer.

Does anyone know what progress procedure would do such a thing?

to set a cookie on your system and it didn't work.

Yes it can be done. I currently link our SPC charts/graphs/data to a
button
on the Job Tracker - Operation level VB-Form so that you can view the most
recent SPC graphs/data for that specific operation.

Set the button on the VB-Form with the RUNPROG vdp/program.p

In the program.p, do a FIND vantage-table WHERE ROWID(vantage-table) =
GetCurrentRowID() no-lock.

This will set you program so that it has the current record from which the
VB-Form is from.

Then just do a DOS SILENT command to launch your external program.

1. From the Inspection Receipt screen, with PartNum "ABC" selected,
2. Click the VB Forms button.
3. Click a XLS button on the VB Form, which activates a progress program,
which retrieves the "ABC.xls" file from the server and opens it in Excel.
4. There would also be a DWG button on the VB Form, which when activate,
would retrieve the "ABC.dwg" CAD file in either autocad or an autocad
viewer.

Does anyone know what progress procedure would do such a thing?

Location. Then point each of the tables listed there to the c:\vntgwk51 (or
however you spell it) folder). It is safe to go ahead and save the report
pointing to that location since Vantage will tell the report where to look
when the report is actually run from Vantage. The default is usually
c:\temp for the "Set Location" option.

Anyway.............I have an RB filter that requires 22 "compared to" values. It does not let me enter in all 22. It only lets me enter in up to 10. This is my current filter.

EmpBasic.EmpID IN-LIST '01','03','07','08','16','18','20','21','22','25'

Unfortunately I need to add 12 more values to this list. These employee numbers have nothing else in common, so this is the only way I have been able to pull in only these employees so far. I also created an exact duplicate of this filter but used my next set of 12 values, but RB didn't like it. I have also tried using "not" for the filter, but I have more "not" values that I would have to enter in than my current filter setup.

Any ideas gang?

EmpBasic.EmpID IN-LIST '35','36','37','38','39','40','41','42','43','44'

If that's all the filter you have then it's a bit easier. However, if you
have more filters you have to duplicate your filter for each "OR" step.
Like this:

EmpBasic.EmpID IN-LIST '01','03','07','08','16','18','20','21','22','25'
And
Empbasic.active =yes
OR
EmpBasic.EmpID IN-LIST '26','27','28','29','30','31','32','33','34','34'
And
Empbasic.active =yes
OR
EmpBasic.EmpID IN-LIST '35','36','37','38','39','40','41','42','43','44'
And
Empbasic.active =yes

If you have several layers of filters for each "OR" group then
Dick's solution is probably better.

I think you get the idea. I've had to code like this in the past due to the
limitation of RB.

You could create a logical function field and then test for "true" in the
filter. As long as there is not a requirement for the user running the
report to change the values. This might have a small impact on performance
though. For example:
In-List = IIF(EmpBasic.EmpID = '01' or
EmpBasic.EmpID = '03' or
EmpBasic.EmpID = '05' or
EmpBasic.EmpID = '08',
True, False)

Specifically to employees I added at check-box VB Form field on Shop
Employee to exclude specific employees from certain efficiency reports. The
production managers can maintain the elligibility themselves. Then I test
for the EmpBasic.CheckBox1 = 'True' in the filter. I also made a report for
them to list all employees with a given checkbox entry.

Anyway.............I have an RB filter that requires 22 "compared to"
values. It does not let me enter in all 22. It only lets me enter in up to
10. This is my current filter.

EmpBasic.EmpID IN-LIST '01','03','07','08','16','18','20','21','22','25'

Unfortunately I need to add 12 more values to this list. These employee
numbers have nothing else in common, so this is the only way I have been
able to pull in only these employees so far. I also created an exact
duplicate of this filter but used my next set of 12 values, but RB didn't
like it. I have also tried using "not" for the filter, but I have more "not"
values that I would have to enter in than my current filter setup.

Any ideas gang?

Do you mean that I should make these as calculations? Then make one final "test" calculation and make that the filter? I guess I'm not following exactly what you mean this morning. It's a Monday....heehee!

How about using a field in a VB Form to flag the employees to be
included? Then just filter like: EmpBasic.Character01 = 'A' or
whatever. It would be easier to maintain in the future, and the best part
- you can delegate it to your HR people or whomever; instead of having to
mess with it yourself every time employees come or go :)

If you use one of the filter options suggested, be sure to put ( parens )
around the ORs to keep your other conditions working.
