You don't have to change the drive letter! Progress ONLY uses the drive &
path if you're running in single user mode. For network connections, it
pulls the file name (vantage.db) out of the string and it has to match the
DB name on the server, but that's it.

Oohh! That's a good trick! Yes, an entry in the client's hosts file should
override what DNS or WINS would otherwise return. You'll probably have to
reboot, or on NT: IPCONFIG /FLUSHDNS might do it.

>Also, any impact in RB from new port numbers being used?

If you specify it by name in the DB connection, you can just change it in
the services file instead of having to change all the reports.

I'm in the process of converting my 300+ RB reports to 5.20. I was going to
simply change my PCs mapping for Vantage (V:) to point at the test server
(Victor) but discovered that the DB Conneciton needs the server name. The
test server is temporary so I hate to change every report and then on
Go-Live day have to hurry and change them all back. V: will eventually
point to the new Epic52 folder on our production server (Vader).

I was wondering if the server name in the DB Connection uses the HOSTS file
and if I might be able to spoof it in that file to see the test server's IP
address instead of the live server's.
Victor has IP 192.168.168.222
Vader has IP 192.168.168.3
If I leave the DB connection server in RB as Vader but in HOSTS point Vader
at 192.168.168.222 would this work? Anything else it might potential mess
up? I don't mind "disconnecting" my PC from our Live Vantage 4.00 for a few
weeks if it will help me avoid touching every report twice. Any other
ideas? Also, any impact in RB from new port numbers being used?

Thanks,
-Todd Caughey

Lost me there. Where is it that it pulls the file name from? Is it using
the service name in the services file? So if I point "Vantage" at port 5200
it should find the test database? Epic52 is currently pointing there. Can
I have two services point to the same port?

Thanks,
-Todd

Answered my own question I guess....
I changed HOST to point the name Vader at our test server's IP address
I changed SERVICES to assign 5200 to the Vantage
No reboot required.
Opened a report in RB and immediately got "field no longer in table"
messages.
Now the work begins. When I get done all the reports will have what they
need to point to the live DB after the conversion.
Thanks again,
-Todd C.

In the DataBase Connections, under Physical Name, if you specify
V:\Vantage\Db\vantage.db but are actually connecting to a network socket
(Network, Multiple Users, Host and Service all filled in) then it ignores
"V:\Vantage\Db\" and only checks that the "vantage.db" portion coincides
with the name of the database it's connecting to. The path to the DB file
is irrelevant, since it's not directly accessing it anyway.

The whole bit about having to change the drive letter in your reports if
Vantage's mapped drive letter changes is BS. You can leave the whole path
out, and just specify "Vantage.dB" if you like.

>Can I have two services point to the same port?

Sure. That can be useful if you have extra databases for test or training
and don't want to change the services file on every PC during updates.
