Hi Mike,
Sometimes yes I do use ODBC. However, more often I use Crystal against an
Access database. I use the Vantage Export function to create some "table dumps"
in dbf format from each of my divisions running Vantage. I then consolidate
these into a single Access database so that I can run Connor consolidated sales
reports.
We used to use ProVision to do something similar running RB against this
Progress Consolidated Sales Database. However, I wanted to simplify the process
(make it not reliant on ProVision programming skills) so that I could teach
non-programmers how to update / maintain this process...and I also wanted to
utilize Crystal with its enhanced feature set instead of RB.
A side benefit to using this Access database is that I have the flexibility to
add fields to these tables to make writing reports easier. This sometimes
negates the need to do certain joins or even utilize sub-reports.
But, the short answer to your original question is - sometimes.
