Reliable printer

we have a hp laserjet 5000 that is 2 years old this month and has printed
160,000 pages. we have it cleaned every 6 months and give it a new
cartridge when it asks for one. last week it asked for a new fuser / paper
feeds / rollers and we got that kit for about $300.

since page 101,678 we have had 30 "events" like paper misfeeds or jams- most
i've fixed have been due to operator error (odd sized paper, stickers, etc).
we have an identical printer in the office area that has not printed as many
pages. it was bought at the same time as the one in back and is in a much
cleaner environment. we've had even fewer problems with it.

We have had a HP LaserJet 5 in our shipping department since 1996 and have
done nothing but change toner cartridges. (knock on wood)
I'm looking for a reliable laser printer that will hold up under
heavy use in a factory environment. ( printing packing slips in the
shipping department).
Any recomendations would be helpful.
Rick
We use the HP 2100TN. It works great and it's only about $1000.00.

Ditto on the 2100. I would not use the HP types which do not have paper
drawer (the kind the load paper from top) where paper is exposed to plant
dust/oils/etc... and can get carried into printer. The units like the 2100
are pretty well sealed. We are using it for shipping documents. Latest
unit (non-N - slaved to a PC) was $664.

I second Jerry's opinion on the old HP's... The problem is that the
newer (>1998) HP's are buggy, have too many features and often are made
with inferior parts. I found a great solution for this; I am using
refurbished HP III's. These printers are true workhorses, and like
Jerry's HP 5 from '96 will never die. Since they really worked great on
the shop floors, I have reintroduced them into the offices and everyone
loves them; they just don't break! I am buying them from Laserserv
(1-800-642-5199) here in Richmond for $350 each, and they come with a 1
year warranty. I am sure you can get similar prices elsewhere.

HTH,

Paul

Yup. The one HP 2100 we have has been mechanically OK for a year, and ~60K
pages. But it has software bugs that have caused some headaches. And
recently I discovered it is incompatible with the Axis Print Servers we use
here. Axis says HP bent the rules on the parallel interface, and some of
the timing is faster than spec. Nice. Later production model 2100s
corrected this. No word yet on firmware updates.

Cool! Thanks for that tip. They have parts too (I like to fix 'em myself
sometimes) and your LJ-III is down to $270 on the web site: Laserserv.Com
