Remote Access

Our terminal service Broad Band connection was well tested when our VP of
Sales went to China and connected fine. (Roadrunner Business Class) She
browsed the internet through terminal server since the Chinese blocks so
many domains.

Does anybody have a suggestion on what software to use for remote access
into our Vantage Server? I am mostly hearing that dial up via phone
modem is the only way, but I find it hard to believe that internet isn't
an option.

Thanks,
Jay

A while back on the onelist there was some talk about files that you can
copy to the hard drive of the remote PC to make remote connections
faster for Vantage. Could anyone help me with this? I have looked
through my achieves and can't find information on this.

I also would like to know the name and location of the splash screen
file so I can edit that as well.

Thanks!

Juliet Martin
Juliet,

I believe you are referring to System Management Utility: Create Schema
Cache file.
The Vantage logo files are located in \epicore\vantage\bitmap\vnlogo.bmp &
vnsplash.bmp both.

Regards, Lee

I am looking for a short term fix ( zero cost, have it done yesterday) and a
longer term solution.

What short term solution works? I am thinking a dial up 56k modem and what
ever software we need. Cable modems, internet access are all long term
solutions.

Got any suggestions?

You need some sort of 'remote control' setup. If you don't have Terminal
Server you could try VNC (free software). If you have a NATed Internet
connection you could setup up each office PC on its own port. Then your
Internet whatever would redirect that port to the appropriate PC (eg 5801 =
PC #1, 5802 = PC #2).

Another solution would be to chuck a modem on the office PCs and use
something like ReachOut.

Anyway, I'm sure you will get lots of suggestions.

Well, let's see...

Zero Cost = MS Netmeeting or Tridia VNC and dial up

Longer term depends on the type of remote access your users will need and
what your tolerance for dealing with the eccentricities of NAT routers or
firewalls is.

Good luck.

Mitchell,
I've been connecting from home for two years, and it has worked well. It's completely free also. Only downside is slightly slow response due to a 28.8 connection on my home side, and the need to dedicate a host PC for the purpose.

Here's what I use:
1. Outlook 2000+ on the host machine to Initiate a VNC connection - triggered by an email I send. This saves from having to open your firewall.
2. TridiaVNC (www.tridiavnc.com), which is the free viewing software (installed on your host machine and client machine). Works similar to PCAnywhere.
3. Download Winip free (http://www.algenta.com/software/) to host your static IP address
4. Subscribe to http://www.dhis.org/dhis/register.html and get a free static IP address

Here's the process:
-Get a static IP name from DHIS above.
-Install WinIP on the client machine to translate your dynamic IP assigned by your ISP to the static IP address from DHIS. (Note: if you can get a static IP address from your ISP you can skip the DHIS and WinIP parts).
-Set up a batch file on your Host computer which initiates a VNC connection from the host to the client. The client will have VNC Viewer activated in ListenMode, while the Host has VNC Service running on it.
-Set up Outlook 2000 with an email rule to look for a particular subject line, which will activate the batch file for VNC.
-The client PC, with WinIP activate and VNC in Listen Mode, sends an email to the host PC. The host PC makes the VNC connection, and a window pops up on the client with a picture of the host desktop. Now any mouse clicks and keyboard keys are sent to the host PC.

It has worked well for me over the past two years. Only occasionally DHIS has had their server down for an hour or so (probably for maintenance or something).

I think you are actually getting a hostname where you can automatically
update the associated IP address. Your idea does sound more secure than
opening up ports.

http://www.dyndns.org is another site that offers the service.

PS I find restricting the colour to 8-bit helps with the speed of VNC over a
PSTN connection.

Yes, you are correct on the hostname. There are at least three other hosting sites that I know of besides DHIS.
I use the 8-bit color option as well, and use Zlib compression, which helps the speed a bit also.

If you have a Remote Access Server on your network then you can use PC
Anywhere. We use it here. You install PC Anywhere on the computer you want
to remote control and tell it to be a host PC on the network. When someone
dials in to the RAS server they launch PC Anywhere and connect to a host PC.
They pick their computer from the list and are connected. All the
processing takes place at the PC you are connected to so just screen shots
are sent over the modem, so it's not that slow from home. One thing... you
must set up screen saver password protection or use NT with security. If
you have multiple host with no password protection someone dialing up could
connect to any PC they wanted.
