Remote promon

well gang perserverence paid off! Epicor and Progress said it couldnt be
done...
I installed a Georgia Works NT/2000 telnet server on my Vantage/Progress
server and
telneted in from my mgt workstation and voila!@# enter host, userid, passwd,
domain then enter cmdline -- x:\epicor\progress\bin\_mprshut.exe -0
x:\epicor\vantage\db\vantage.db...
PRESTO! PROMON on a remote workstation :)

Cheers! Lee

Has anyone attempted or know if its possible to setup PROMON on a
workstation other than the Vantage/Progress server? I've made several half
hearted attempts... after the second go I decided to ask the group.

What I would like to accomplish is: connect to my Citrix desktop from home
or abroad and launch PROMON. I can control Services, etc from my Citrix
desktop via DamewareNT Utilities and the last piece of the puzzle is db
control thru remote promon...
(I don't want to load pcanywhere or the likes on vantage server)

I set up the Remote Console service that comes with the NT Server Resource
Kit on our Vantage 4.0 server. This isn't the greatest for remote
administration, but it does save some time. Basically, it lets you issue
console commands from your workstation as if you were running a command
prompt on the server.

I wrote some batch files for some of the common promon commands and put them
on the server. The big advantage for me was it saved me having to run to the
computer room every time all our licenses were used up and we needed to
figure out who could log out.

I heard some mention that the new Progress Explorer in v5.0 ties in with
Internet Explorer? Is remote administration any easier in Vantage 5.0?

I have had this working in the past. Version 2.5 or so. There is also a GUI
version of promon (wproshut). I believe it came with version 2.7 located in
the bin directory. Either way the following works with ver 3.0 and should work
on 4.0 and 5.0.

GUI:
Need to find and copy wproshut.exe and wproshut.sym to your current bin
directory.

Create the following shortcut.
X:\DLC\bin\wproshut.exe -db X:\Vantage\DB\dcdv7.db -N TCP -H hostname -S
servicename

Dos:
X:\DLC\bin\_mprshut.exe -db X:\Vantage\DB\dcdv7.db -N TCP -H hostname -S
servicename

* The "Start in folder:" must be the \bin directory on Vantage Server.

X = mapped drive to Vantage
hostname = name in c:\winnt\system32\drivers\etc\hosts file that maps to
Vantage Server IP.
service name = name in the c:\winnt\system32\drivers\etc\services file for
Vantage.

Jim,
I have Scanned the drives (file search) for wproshut.exe and wproshut.sym but can not locate them
on our server. I have 4.00.901. Any Ideas?

A simple solution for remote control to your server is to download "tridiavnc" from www. tridiavnc.com.
Install a copy on your server, and another copy on your workstation, and you can quickly view/control the server from the workstation. It has passwords, compression, and some other features. I also use it to get on my workstation from home, and from my workstation I can then access the server also. It has saved a trip or two to the office in the evenings.

Thanks to those of you who considered my question. I get all the remote
control I need thru Dameware NT Utilities without having to take control of
a remote host. I spoke with Progress Tech Support this afternoon and got
pretty much the same answer with one execption... in a unix environment
(mine is NT) PROMON is run via telnet 'Eureka!' Answer (I hope to test this
evening) Microsoft telnet daemon (part of IIS I think)... telnet to the
NT/Vantage/Progress Server and run the PROMON command string.
Sounds good in theory... inquire off channel if you'd like to know the
results.
