Replacement Components

Does anybody have any ideas for us on how to handle replacement
components.

We often have replacement components to be used in BOMs. We create a new
rev of the BOM that calls for the new component. But we still have a
supply of the old component that we want to use up.

But we don't seem to be able to find a way to run out the supply of the
old component without manually watching the supply of the old component
and switching to the new BOM when none of the old parts exist.

We use V6.0 and backflush.

I had thought that a) marking the old part as run-out and b) providing the
new part as a substitute for the old part would work. But backflushing
seems to ignore that there are none of the old part left so doesn't switch
over to the new part once the old part is at zero.

Please let me know how or if anyone has experienced this problem and
has a solution. We would like to use Global Alerts to send emails to
the respective parties to let them know if changes have been made or
require their attention (ie. inventory, ECO changes, etc.). We don't
host our own email exchange and utilize an outside service. In
addition, we connect through SBC as our smtp server. Therefore, in
order to connect to SBC server, we need to use an authentication
process which is currently not part of the functionality of Vantage
6.1. The supposed workaround is to then use the virtual smtp server
from the microsoft server to act as the go-between. Unfortunately, all
the messages get stuck in the queue in the server because SBC doesn't
like something about the messages sent by Vantage and drops the
connection. Thanks for any help.
You are not alone. What SBC does not like is the LF.LF. vs. the correct
format of CR LF. CR LF. For ending emails.
Epicor has stuck their head in the sand on this issue and has refused to
acknowledge a problem. The answer is "Microsoft accepts it" and therefore
my request to have this changed has been refused several times.
Your only alternative that I am aware of is to set up a mail server for
yourself and use it. I have done this now with two companies. If I am not
mistaken the problem is specifically Qmail refusing to accept the faulty
mail. With SBC I am sure you are not going to get them to change, so taking
it over yourself or finding another that can host you that does not use
Qmail are the only options.
Please do submit the problem to Support though. The more people that report
this as unacceptable the better.
Good luck,
Aaron Hoyt

I am sure that you know this but we didn't. Once something is stuck
in the queue, nothing will get out. We thought we had the problem
Aaron described, but it was something else stuck in the queue.
Support has a program to delete the records in the queue and that
solved it for us. (We couldn't delete them with ODBC. The symptoms
suggest to me that rights were not granted to that table for ODBC.)

To give a little more information for future troubleshooting for others...
You can find if you have the issue I spoke of when you attempting to send
email alerts if...
1. They don't send and,
2. you examine the smtp log in the vantage working directory of the computer
running the process server and follow up on the error reported.
Good luck,

Were running Vantage 6.1 on a Windoz 2003 server and I'm planning on using
NISTIME to set the time on the server. Has anyone done this while Vantage
was running? Does it cause any problems with data collection etc.

Paul,

On Windows 2003 Server, you can use the Windows Time Service to update
from the Internet time source of your choice. There is no need to use
NISTime. That said, NISTime is a great program - we had no problems
with it in the NT4 days.

We've been using NISTIME forever it seems. Both when our Vantage server was NT4 as well as now on Win2K-Server. Never experienced any problems at all. Usual correction is to add 5-6 seconds when run daily and does not affect DC. In fact even when I have manually set the time by 2-3 minutes it does not upset DC as much as it does the plant employees if I set it forward during a break or lunch and the bell rings "too soon". Better to have very small corrections more often..

With Win2K3 though I would probably just reference one of the NISTIME time sources using the built in facility and have one less service running.

Yeah, I know. But we have site specific issues related to the recent upgrade of the Vantage server from NT4 to Win2K. Major server name / domain name conflicts and AD issues due to bugs in the upgrade process. As long as things are working I'll wait until we decommission that server and have a new one with Win2K3 for 8.0 in 18 months or so.
Thanks,
