Report builder - on every machine - necessary?

You absolutely do not have to install report builder on each PC, it is an
option when installing. Same as tutorial, training, etc. By user you can
choose to install each of these.

I have a dumb question - which probally has been answered before but...

I am responsible of Vantage and its security. Our IS person is
responsible for the computers. But he does all the installations for
Vantage. I just noticed Report Builder is installed and accessable to
EVERYONE except data collection. He says report builder must be
installed on everyone machine - this is required by Vantage? I have a
big problem with this - I just opened my entire system (I know except
payroll) but I believe when everyone goes to Start - Programs - Progress
9.0B Shared Network Installation - Report Builder and Results are
there!!

Do I have to have this installed on everyones machine? If so - isn't
this a security issue? Can some please help me! - My boss is not
going to be to happy to begin with. Are very small and not to many
employees know enough about Vantage to use it but I know at least 3
people that know enough and would access this information.

Dina-

No you DO NOT need those installed at every client. You should have
limited licenses for Report Builder as it is.

Dina,

It is not required. We only have it installed on two computers to
maintain security. Once we get a report the way we want it, we add it
to the standard vantage menus for users to use. That way we keep the
confidential information confidential. You can also keep
confidentiality by using different libraries for different reports.

We no longer allow attachments to files. To access/share Report
Files, please go to the following link:
http://www.egroups.com/files/vantage/
(Note: If this link does not work for you the first time you
try it, go to www.egroups.com, login and be sure to save your password,
choose My Groups, choose Vantage, then choose Files. If you save the
password, the link above will work the next time you try it.)
The links get installed with the progress client. What
we do after installing the client is deleting the Progress
tools folder from all of the menus. The client is still installed,
just the menu shortcuts are gone. With the progress
client installed, theoretically all users could run report
builder if they knew how to start it. After deleting the
Progress folder from the menus, we generally move the
Report Builder.vtg file out of the Vantage directory as
well. Hope this helps.

John,

I only have one license for report builder - I should be the only with access to it other than the owner. But Vantage Tech support just called me back - he said I DO need it installed but the icon does not need to appear (pretty crummy)?? To me they are counting on
employees being dumb or honest. In either case some of mine are neither. He is suppose to send me a e-mail for NT security. I am running 4.0 - does this make a difference?

I actually went to every ones computer and tested if it would run. - It does. Now with results you need to enter your id and password can I change report builder to do the same?

Dina,

Hi,

This is Virginia. I work for Steve doing Vantage Reporting and some
tech support every other Friday. Here is what I know about your issue.
You do not have to set up the Report Builder icon/program on every
workstation. If you are running Vantage 3.X. I have not worked with
4.0 much yet so I'm not sure. Anyway, In the install process it asks
what icons you want on your menu list and desk top. You can uncheck
Report builder and Results.

In regards to security....Yes anyone who has a drive map to the vantage
directory could get to the report builder icon (ReportBuilder.vtg) and
"play". One good way to secure this is do what we have done here. The
default report area is called reports.prl. It is in the Vantage or
Vantage\lib directory (depending on who created it). I have made a
backup of this (named rptBkup.prl) in another area that only a select
few have access to. I also have menu.prl for reports that are made
available on the vantage menu. I don't know if you have windowsNT
workstations or windows95 but if you are concerned about end users,
WindowsNT has profiles that can limit access to files and windows95 has
a policy editor that can do the same although it is a pain to work with.

Hope this helps and that it is not too confusing. You can contact me
here via Steve's e-mail if you need to

Thanks and good luck,

Virginia Smith
